The story so far...

The next few days pass with Ashwini and Lej trying to figure out a way to reach the gandaberunda, while the rest of the Crows stay at home with Kiki to give her lessons. At the end of the third day Ashwini has discovered how to contact the Witches’ Guild, but the catch is they will only speak to Kiki...

At dawn the next day Kiki, Ashwini and Chamundeshwari leave the Crow House for Tamarind Station, where they find the black market and a couple members of the Witches’ Guild. Unfortunately they reveal that the only witch who could possibly reverse the protection spell on the palace is the Good Witch, but she has been Mahishasura’s prisoner for weeks. Bad luck! One of the witches also reveals that although the Crow House hides Kiki, if Mahishasura were to have one of her possessions and make the Good Witch perform a tracking spell, he would be able to find her regardless...which is when Kiki remembers the desk and curtains that came into Mysore before her.

Ashwini and Chamundeshwari both agree it is far too dangerous to go back to the balcony to see if Mahishasura has her desk or curtains, and Ashwini proposes that they go to Lalith Mahal to rescue the Good Witch. For once Kiki and Lej agree, and veto this idea. They’re not in agreement for long though, as Kiki thinks that maybe Plan B (aka Vishnu’s plan of defeating Mahishasura) is the way to go. But how? Up in her room, anxious about Mahishasura having her possessions, Kiki decides it is worth the danger and sneaks out of the house. She needs to make sure he can’t find her, and by extension, the Crows.

Kiki doesn’t get far before she is scared half to death by Pip who insists on going with her. Once they get close to the house with the balcony, Chamundeshwari intercepts them. She has already tried to get to the balcony but it is impossible! Before they can turn around and head for home the three of them are ambushed by dozens of Asura, and although Chamundeshwari is an incredible fighter, soon both Pip and Kiki are grabbed by Asura and stolen away. Not good!

The Asura takes Kiki to Lalith Mahal to meet with Mahishasura. He tells her there is a reason she picked his story to tell, and that she fears that no matter what, the monsters will always be there, which he assures her is true. An Asura brings Kiki to a cell where she finds Pip, and across from them, the Good Witch. When an Asura brings them dinner he drops his keys. Kiki thinks this is likely too good to be true and could be a trick, but she goes along with Pip and the Good Witch (who reveals that the first spell Mahishasura made her cast when she was captured was to prevent her from casting any more spells in Lilith Mahal unless he requests it. Inconvenient.) Lilith Mahal is eerily empty, and the easy escape was indeed too good to be true. Mahishaura meets them right at the exit and when Pip accuses him of being afraid of Kiki he throws Pip across the courtyard and Pip goes quiet. :(

In the distraction after throwing Pip, the Good Witch is able to leave Lilith Mahal and therefore use her powers again! She transports the three of them right into the middle of the Crow House. In his grief for Pip, Lej lashes out at Kiki and tells her she should have been the one to die. Simha takes Pip to Chamundeshwai to make sure he is honored and cremated. Crying up in her room, Kiki starts drawing a bird on her window sill and to her surprise, it comes to life and flies away.

Ashwini visits Kiki in her room, but Kiki decides to be a friend rather than bring up the bird. Ashwini tells her that maybe she has an illness, and maybe her anxiety doesn't need to define everything about her. The next day they take Pip's ashes to the Kaveri and scatter them over the water.

Well that was a sad section for sure. Let's hope our heroes bounce back in our forth and final read-along with Kiki Kallira!

Questions:

  1. Do you think Pip is really gone?
  2. Why do you think Mahishasura didn't track Kiki if he had her possessions and the Good Witch?
  3. Now that Kiki has discovered she can draw things to life in this world, what do you think she will do with that ability?
  4. The next section is the final section of the book! Do you have any predictions for how the book will end?

See you again on Friday as we discuss Chapters 23 - 31!
