8 Fantasy Audiobooks Perfect For Listening To In The Fall

By Ariana Copeland

The fall season is finally upon us! Who else is ready? I certainly am. Mentally, I am already in the cooler weather, cozy sweaters, pumpkin spice, hot apple cider, and marshmallow mode!

Now that you are contemplating sitting by a crackling bonfire and enjoying the crunchy leaves, how about some audiobook recommendations?

I am an avid audiobook listener and always love knowing what new, great book anyone is listening to. Why don’t I recommend eight fantasy audiobooks for you to plug in your ears throughout this season?

Fantasy Audiobooks You Need To Listen To

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Let us start off with a fan favorite: The Cruel Prince. Narrated by Caitlin Kelly, this story comes alive in the world of Faerie.

Jude, a human girl, lives and strives to survive among the tricky fey. And when the cruel, youngest prince of the Court catches notice of her, it all becomes tricks, games, and cunning to navigate the political machinations.

Full of sass, wit, and an immersive world , Black moves you through her fast-paced story and leaves you wanting to move onto the next book immediately.

An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

I can’t help but recommend An Enchantment of Ravens which is a book a little more on target for the fall season.

This is a lovely standalone story of a human artist, Isobel, who captures the attention of the faerie autumn prince, Rook, with her incredible paintings.

In a world where Craft is envied by the fair folk, Isobel’s skills are highly prized, but when she dares to paint human emotion upon the autumn prince’s features, she risks his ruination. He steals her away to seek justice over what she has done, and soon the two find themselves falling for and needing one another.

Narrated by the magnificently talented Julia Whelan, the story sweeps you away.

Stardust by Neil Gaiman

I recently revisited the incredible and fantastical story of Stardust. Whereupon my first read through did not land with me, listening to it this time around really brought the world of Stormhold to life for me.

Of course, Neil Gaiman himself narrates his book (and who doesn’t love that), and I was enthralled.

An adult fairytale comes to life with Tristran seeking out a falling star to prove his love and soon he finds himself encountering witches, princes, a sassy human star, and sky pirates.

What is not to love? (Do make note that this book is intended for an adult audience .)

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynn Jones

Now here is a fun, cozy listen! Grab some hot cider or a cup of hot tea and settle in for the wacky adventures of Sophie, Howl, and Calcifer.

Jenny Sterlin will have you laughing and rolling your eyes at the whimsical shenanigans these characters get themselves into as Sophie gets cursed, Howl preens, and Calcifer riddles on over his woes.

Both Jones through her writing and Sterlin through her narration have a way of drawing you in for a universe so incredibly new and full of quirky magic

Anatomy: A Love Story by Dana Schwartz

Anatomy became an instant favorite of mine the moment I started listening to it! Do you want some gothic vibes mixed with a Mary Shelley air in upper class Scotland? This is the book.

Whatsmore, Mhairi Morrison gives us a fantastic performance as Hazel with her beautifully alluring Scottish accent !

Hazel is a lady who wants to be a surgeon during a time where medical practices are growing, but she is a woman. So, using her brother’s identity to get herself into medical classes, Hazel soon finds herself embroiled in mystery and wonder over the human body and building an unexpected relationship with the commoner Jack, a resurrectionist.

Gilded by Marissa Meyer

First off, who doesn’t love a good Marissa Meyer fairytale retelling? Secondly, have you ever experienced a Rebecca Soler narration? She is definitely a fave, and Gilded brings these two wonderful things together.

Gilded is a dark fantasy retelling of Rumpelstiltskin. This story is all about the spooky vibes, great for October.

Full of ghosts, god magic, and a mysterious castle, this haunting tale tells the story of a girl named Serilda who can spin lies into stories almost as seamlessly and magically as how a certain poltergeist can spin straw into gold.

This book is perfect for anyone who wants lore and mystery.

Belladonna by Adalyn Grace

Speaking of the gothic vibes, have you tried listening to Belladonna yet? It is Gothic Bridgerton with mystery and Death . This haunting and intriguing story is narrated by Kristin Atherton.

Signa Farrow was tragically orphaned as a baby and has been passed down from guardian to guardian, because no matter what, Death keeps coming for them all.

So, when she comes to live with her extended Hawthorne family, who has already experienced a tragic loss, Signa surprisingly finds a place she feels she can fit into.

Unfortunately, it seems Death is not ready to leave Signa’s side just yet, and if she wants to keep a hold of her new family then she will need to uncover who is behind their most recent losses.

After the Forest by Kell Woods

If you are in the mood for another adult fairytale, this is a story to check out. After the Forest asks the question: what happened to Hansel and Gretel after they escaped the witch that tried to eat them in the forest?

The story follows Greta as she tries to make ends meet for herself and her brother, Hans. Each of them are dealing with their own trauma of their past, the loss of their father, and the rising tensions in their village.

As Hans keeps turning to drinking and gambling, Greta turns to the grimoire that speaks to her and teaches her to infuse magic into her baking. Soon she wrestles with the reality that she may not be accepted for her hidden gifts, and is the magic worth more loss?

After the Forest is sweetly narrated by Esther Wane, who brings you into this Germanic setting and storybook tale.

Did I manage to put you in the Fall mood with these books? I hope at least a few of these titles stand out, regardless of whether you decide to listen or read. Each one I found to be immersive and wondrous in its own way because that is what fantasy does - it steals us away. I just prefer it when it is in my ears, whisking my mind away. I hope you enjoy your fall escapades with a warm blanket and even warmer drink.
