Dark fantasy romance, I’m sure you’ve heard of this genre in passing, and if not, I’m here to give you a little information on what this beautifully addictive genre is all about.

Personally, I love reading books in this sub-genre. They give insight and perspective into the world around us in a way that you might find horrifyingly beautiful, and a view into the darker side of things that you wouldn’t really want to venture into in real life.

If this genre sounds interesting and you feel you can handle the dark side, here's a list of 8 spicy dark fantasy romance books for adults.

CONTENT WARNING - PLEASE READ:

Books that are part of the sub-genre contain, well, dark themes, including things like slavery, substance use/abuse, mental illnesses, violence, murder, toxic relationships, repressed people’s fighting for freedom, mental/physical/verbal abuse, and assault, to name a few.

Venture into the dark side with these dark fantasy romance books…

On Wings of Blood (Bloodwing Academy #1)

Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️ (Mild)

“It's not protection, little dragon. It's a claim." His gray eyes darkened as they flicked down to my exposed neck, an unspoken reminder hanging between us. "You're mine. No one touches what belongs to me.”

― Briar Boleyn, On Wings of Blood

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Explicit sexual content, murder, injury/threat to animals, dubious consent, bullying between love interests, threat of sexual assault, graphic violence, physical abuse, blood play.

If Fourth Wing and Zodiac Academy had a baby, and we sprinkled some Arthurian legend and Dark Academia into it we’d have On Wings of Blood by Briar Boleyn.

Medra Pendragon wakes up in a pile of rubble and corpses with a human? Vampire? I don't believe it was confirmed what was hovering over her when she awakened, only that it wanted a taste of her and not in a good way. Thankfully, whatever it was was dispatched by Blake Drakharrow, Medra’s captor and soon-to-be-betrothed.

Despite saving Medra’s neck (literally), Medra doesn’t want Blake’s help, in any way; or does she? Forced to enroll in a school full of bloodthirsty vampires, the occasional dwarf, and few humans, Medra must fight her way through and emerge triumphant.

Morally grey, possessive, blood thirsty, and a bully, Blake Drakharrow does everything he can to drive Medra to stay away from him. That doesn’t stop Blake and Medra from eventually sneaking a–[text redacted].

I read an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) of this dark fantasy romance a while ago, and it never really left my mind. One of the reasons why is because of a certain character named Regan. I will start this off by saying I don’t like her and would really like to smack some common sense into her. This girl bothers me to no end. She’s a mean girl, and she has a different spelling of my name?? Please (if I were a mean girl, she’d be me 😜). All in all, I enjoyed this book so much. Medra is a very real FMC, and although she might be a little brash, I loved her and Florence.

Daughter of No Worlds (The War of Lost Hearts #1)

Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Medium)

“Did you know that when caterpillars make a cocoon, their bodies totally dissolve? They become nothing, before they become something else.”

― Carissa Broadbent, Daughter of No Worlds

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Explicit sexual content, slavery, on-page whipping, abuse, graphic violence, sexual assault (discussed, not on page), grief/death of loved ones, mentions of grooming.

Daughter of No Worlds by Carissa Broadbent is about a former slave who wants to fight for her people's freedom and the man who will help lift her up.

Tisannah thought she could buy her freedom back. Turns out her Master was joking with her since he didn't think she could actually do it until it would be too late, and whoops, Master is looking rather lifeless.

So Tisannah travels across the sea to a guild of magic wielders in hopes that they can help her, only to be dumped at the home of a grumpy and unsuspecting fire wielder, Maxantarius Farlione. Now she must complete an apprenticeship with him, or risk not achieving her dreams and saving her best friend, whom she left behind.

This book did something to me, and when I reached the end, it left me reeling with hope, sadness, disappointment, and happiness. Not all of the characters are who you think they are; some seem like allies but are truly enemies. Tisannah is such a strong FMC, and even with the world against her, she still prevails and does her best to come out on top.

A Shadow in the Ember (Flesh and Fire #1)

Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Medium)

“You’re a blessing, Sera. No matter what anyone says or believes, you are a blessing. You always have been. You need to know that.”

― Jennifer L. Armentrout, A Shadow in the Ember

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Explicit sexual content, suicidal ideation, child/animal abuse, forced sex work (mentioned), on-page whipping, graphic violence, sexual harassment, death of parent(s) from childbirth and suicide (mentioned).

A Shadow in the Ember by Jennifer L. Armentrout is about a daughter who was bargained away to the God of Death, only to discover the meaning of life.

Seraphena Mierel is ready for Death. In order to save her people and world from the Rot, Sera must become the Consort to the Primal of Death and make him fall in love with her, so that she can kill him.

But when the time comes for the Primal of Death to claim her… he doesn’t show up. Three more attempts and three years later, no one seems to care about her anymore. But then things finally change, for better or worse, and the Primal of Death comes to retrieve his Consort. Things happen and maybe life is worth living after all.

I love this book, and I know I say that a lot, but this book was one of my top reads from 2025. Sera is my girl, I absolutely adore her, and the struggles she has with mental health are issues that I can relate to. I loved how her relationship with the Primal of Death develops, it's a peak enemies to lovers dark fantasy romance.

A Shadow in the Ember is a prequel series to the Blood and Ash series about the gods, goddesses, and Primals.

Throne of the Fallen (Prince of Sin #1/Standalone)

Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Medium)

“Darkness was never as appealing as the light to most, but that didn’t mean it was any less integral to life. Too much sunshine withered the soul. Balance was the key.”

― Kerri Maniscalco, Throne of the Fallen

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Explicit sexual content, blackmail, violence, death of parents, murder, kidnapping, threats of sexual assault, self-injury for blood, mentioned infertility, blood drinking, abandonment.

Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalco is a very Sin-filled book. 7 brothers, 7 Princes of Hell, and this is Envy’s tale.

Camilla Antonius never really thought she’d be blackmailed into entering a Devil's Bargain, but that's how she winds up in the arms of Prince Envy. As an avid art collector, Prince Envy knows how to tell a real from a fake, and that's how he blackmailed Miss Antonius into helping him win an anonymous contest.

Once the Devil's Bargain has been set in place, Camilla and Envy find themselves being drawn together, oftentimes quite heatedly and passionately.

This book is a spinoff of the Kingdom of the Wicked series by Kerri Maniscalco, and Princes of Hell, Demons, Vampires, Witches, Goddesses, and other magical beings make it a very Sinful ride. If you read the Kingdom of the Wicked series, you’ll be glad to know that the worldbuilding is significantly expanded upon in this book.

Kerri Maniscalco knows how to write a compelling dark fantasy romance like no one else. The romance in this could be considered instalust, but in my opinion, a fast-burning romance is needed occasionally. If you’re looking for a new Book Boyfriend who will burn the world down for you and get on his knees, Envy is your man.

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City #1)

Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Medium)

“He told me to stop crying. Said it would only satisfy those who had wronged me. That I shouldn’t give them the gift of my sorrow.”

― Sarah J. Maas, House of Earth and Blood

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Explicit sexual content, suicidal ideation, slut-shaming, torture, slavery, misogyny, depression, murder, graphic violence.

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas is about a woman who had her life stolen from her and the angel that helps her find it again.

Bryce Quinlan is living her best life until her best friend is murdered along with their group of close friends. The suspect is caught, but life loses its meaning after that night and haunts her until years later, when the murders start again.

With the accused not being the murderer, Bryce teams up with Hunt Athalar to figure out what is happening and why, after all these years, this nightmare is coming back.

This is my favorite Sarah J. Maas series. The political intrigue, character relationships, romance, and action all come together to deliver a gripping murder mystery. The best friend is one of my favorite characters in this series, which is tragic since she doesn’t make it through, physically at least. If I had a nickel for every time the best friend (whom I adore) didn’t make it, I'd have two. Terrible, I know, but this is such an amazing book that it hurts... But in a good way.

King of Battle and Blood (Adrian X Isolde #1)

Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Hot)

“There was a difference between a monster and someone who could be monstrous.”

― Scarlett St. Clair, King of Battle and Blood

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Explicit sexual content, graphic violence, death of a parent (on page), death, physical abuse, blood drinking, sexual harassment, sexism.

King of Battle and Blood by Scarlett St. Clair is about a Vampire conqueror and his mortal bride.

No one truly wants to be married to a hot vampire conqueror, right? Isolde certainly thinks she doesn't want to get married to Adrian, but with the threat of Adrian potentially taking over her father's kingdom, she reconsiders his offer to marry. She’s supposed to hate him with all of her heart, but when dark truths about history start surfacing, sometimes it’s easier to give in to attraction than to fight it, even if not everyone gets a happy ever after…

This was my first Scarlett St. Clair book, and I really enjoyed reading it. The vampires in this story were bloodthirsty as they tend to be, and the attraction, tension, and conflict? Muah, chefs kiss.

This book right here, it’s true instalust, the tension between Isolde and Adrian is so thick the moment these two end up on page together, and I loved that so much.

Phantasma (Wicked Games #1/Standalone)

Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Hot)

“That’s not how things work, angel. Life is not measured in good or bad thoughts—it’s how you treat the world around you despite them.”

― Kaylie Smith, Phantasma

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Gore, explicit sexual content, OCD tendencies, intrusive thoughts, dubious consent (not between MCs), alcohol consumption, death of a parent, torture, blood, body horror.

Phantasma by Kaylie Smith was a scorchingly gruesome standalone dark fantasy romance that left me equally satisfied and craving more of the series.

Ophelia Grimm doesn’t know what to do. Her mother is gone, and she just inherited her family's necromancy powers and estate, which, as it turns out, is in debt. After a little spat sends her younger sister running off to Phantasma, Ophelia decides to enter Phantasma herself to find her sister.

There, she instead finds a very attractive and very aggravating Phantom, Blackwell, who sets her nerves alight in annoyance, among other feelings. As Ophelia progresses through Phantasma, she must remember the most important rule they have: don’t fall in love.

Phantasma. Just WOW. I was speechless for a while after finishing this book. It was like someone had taken The Hunger Games, Throne of the Fallen, and sprinkled in a little bit more gore and spice then graciously gifted us Phantasma.

Inside this book, you can find a sentient Manor, a ghost kitty, and horrors upon horrors, but beware, for not everything is as it seems.

If you want to read other books by Kaylie Smith, be sure to check out Enchantra, book two in the Wicked Games series.

Bride of Brutal Hearts (Bloodborne Court #1)

Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Extra Hot)

“If we're judging who needs a bath based on how badly we want to lick each other, then I'm afraid neither of us gets to bathe.”

― Kate Stevens, Bride of Brutal Hearts

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Explicit sexual content, graphic violence, torture, slavery, blood drinking, dubious consent, murder, cannibalism, religious trauma, trauma, chronic illness, infertility, miscarriage, death of a pregnant person, suicidal ideation, witnessed rape and assault.

Bride of Brutal Hearts by Kate Stevens is a spicy dark MMF (Male, Male, Female) villain fantasy romance about a mortal and her two vampire immortals.

Nessa Halloran lives in pain. It’s why she never wanted to get married, why she didn’t bother hitting the birth quota required of people under 30, and why she became the owner of a bookshop to live quietly. But then her sister is selected when the vampires come to collect their harvest, and Nessa feels she has no choice but to save her pregnant sister by volunteering in her palace.

Perhaps it was fate that led her to volunteer... The fate that led to her becoming the Mortal Bride for the Butcher and the Conqueror.

I did, in fact, not see the plot twists coming, contrary to what my haiku says. As I'm writing this, I’m still in shock as to what happened in the last 100 pages or so. I was absolutely captivated by this ARC read from the moment I opened it. The pain and dread that Nessa was dealing with, and her tumultuous emotions, kept me enraptured throughout the story.

I saw that coming

There you have it! Don't let the darkness scare you away... If you love your fantasy books twisted and full of intense romance, these eight books will be the perfect read for you. I hope you'll add at least a few of these stories to your TBR list. Happy reading!

Great list! Dark fantasy romance with rich worldbuilding and emotional intensity is my favorite. Stories filled with chaos and mature themes really make this genre stand out. Loved the recommendations — always excited to discover more dark fantasy reads.
