Since 1974, Dungeons & Dragons (also known by fans as DnD) has taken the world by storm as one of the most popular fantasy role-playing tabletop games. Since then, many players have been inspired to not only create novels showcasing their love for the game but also to showcase the love that can be built from it.

Over the past few years, this sub-genre of DnD-inspired romances has risen in popularity significantly, and just like the game, it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.

Here are some of the best DnD inspired romance books around!

Natural Twenty by Charlie Novak

Spice Scale - 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (4 - Hot)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Injury, Toxic Friendship/Relationship, Death of Parent, Emotional Abuse, Infidelity, Gaslighting, Sexual Content, Panic Attacks/Disorders

Published in August 2020, Natural Twenty is about a flower shop owner, Leo, and a bookstore owner, Jacob. One thing they have in common? Both are self-proclaimed as destined to be alone.

Yet, as they cross paths and their attraction to each other grows, they must decide if giving in to each other is the right path, even if staying alone may be the road to safety.

Novak not only perfectly captures the friends-to-lovers aspect of Leo and Jacob’s relationship but also amazingly describes the emotion and fear of giving in to the unexpected. Natural Twenty was a favorite romance read of mine!

Strength Check by Katherine McIntyre

Spice Sale - 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (3 - Medium)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Addiction, Grief, Religious Bigotry, Death of Parent, Toxic Relationship, Alcoholism, Biphobia, Emotional Abuse, Homophobia/Lesbophobia, Infidelity, Misogyny, Sexual Content, Grief, Gaslighting, Alcohol, Body Shaming

Published in September of 2021, this romance novel is all about Roxie and Melody, two roommates to lovers brought together by breakups, family drama, and, of course, DnD. Roxie is the owner of a recently opened board game cafe in San Francisco and needs a roommate to not only help her escape her family but also to help lighten her financial struggles.

On the other side of the country, Melody is escaping her toxic relationship and preparing to relocate to San Francisco for work, where she still needs to find housing. As two women repeatedly failed by love, they’ll need a whole lot of strength and healing to make it out alive together.

McIntyre paints a beautiful picture of the raw realities of family drama, financial stress, and toxic relationships throughout this story. The growing love between Melody and Roxi is captivating and emotional, making this book impossible to put down.

Taking Initiative by Elle M. Stewart

Spice Scale - 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (3 - Medium)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Death, Emotional Abuse, Grief, Alcohol, Toxic Relationship, Sexual Content, Sexual Assault, Cursing

Published in June of 2024, Taking Initiative follows a recently single female MC, Jo, as she visits her new town’s library in hopes of joining their tabletop MnM (DnD equivalent) game and making some friends along the way. Her plan is thrown for a loop when she meets the hosting librarian, Felix, who’s overwhelmed with his game night responsibilities.

While Felix is in over his head, Jo is head over heels as she agrees to teach him her MnM master ways. Their playful relationship takes damage as they’re forced to share the last remaining hotel room at an MnM convention, and Jo’s past relationship starts to hurt them both. All they can do is blow on their dice, roll for love, and hope to make it out unscathed.

Stewart beautifully crafted the MnM game in this romance book to perfectly describe the gameplay to new and old DnD players alike. Jo and Felix were fascinating to fall in love with, and I found myself rooting for them from day one.

Dating and Dragons by Kristy Boyce

Spice Scale - None (0 - this is a YA book)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Bullying, Car Accident, Injury, Medical Content, Sexual Harassment, Body Shaming, Toxic Friendship, Sexism, Animal Death, Abandonment, Cursing, Grief, Emotional Abuse, Panic Attacks/Disorders, Gaslighting

Published in December of 2024, Dating & Dragons focuses on Quinn as she starts at a new high school and befriends Logan, cute and kind, as he catches her eye. Through mutual friends, they end up reconnecting during a DnD campaign where Logan is suddenly harder to handle than Quinn had anticipated.

As he grows possessive over the group’s DnD campaign, Quinn must ensure he respects her, even if it means becoming enemies first. What could go wrong? The group has a no-dating policy, after all….

Boyce creates a riveting experience in her DnD romance books, which are part of her Dungeons and Drama Series, by crafting charming characters and immersive storylines. Dating and Dragons was a super fun read and an absolutely satisfying follow-up to its predecessor, Dungeons & Drama.

Roll for Love by M.K. England

Spice Scale - None (0 - this is a YA book)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Homophobia, Racism, Biphobia/Lesbophobia, Suicidal Thoughts, Grief, Panic Attacks/Disorders

Published in April 2025, Roll for Love follows Harper & Ollie, two childhood best friends who cross paths once again when Harper moves across the country to her grandmother’s farm.

While both of them fight to build a post-graduation life for themselves, they spend their days together in their DnD campaign, where their characters are more than friends. Will roleplaying be the end of their long history as childhood friends?

England does a fantastic job of building lovable characters and seamlessly weaving DnD into their love story. Harper & Ollie were so fun, and this is an absolute must-read!

Roll for Romance by Lenora Woods (Upcoming Release)

Spice Scale - 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (3 - Medium)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Sexual Content, Panic Attacks, Alcohol, Homophobia

Scheduled for publishing in July 2025, Roll for Romance is set to be the romance of the summer. Sadie has declined to join her best friend’s DnD campaign for years, but finally ran out of excuses. Also roped into joining is Noah, a new-to-town bartender who’s charming and mesmerizes both Sadie’s character and her.

As their relationship grows, Sadie is forced to choose between moving across the country for her dream job or staying behind and risking it all for Noah.

Roll for Romance has me counting down the days until its release! Sadie and Noah are going to be the couple of the summer, and I can’t wait to get my hands on this romance book!

Thank you for following along as we reviewed some of my favorite (and soon-to-be favorite) DnD romance books! Let me know which ones you’ve read and which ones you’ll be adding to your TBR.

Until next time, happy reading (& campaigning)!
