By Frankie Higginson

So, you just finished A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. You lost yourself in the immersive world, you fell in love with the characters, you devoured every page… Now what?

I believe that the best way to overcome a book hangover is to get lost in something new. Here are 6 books I recommend you add to your TBR if you’re stuck on what to read after ACOTAR!

Read These Romantasy Books And Series If You Loved A Court Of Thorns And Roses

One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig

Book #1 in The Shepherd King duology (completed)

Published: September 2022

Spice Rating: Extra Mild (🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Murder, Sexual Content, Violence (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

“I am stronger than my doubts.”

One Dark Window is for anyone who loves books with unique magic systems or is looking for their next big bookish adventure with a dash of romance sprinkled in.

The story follows Elspeth, who survived a mysterious illness as a child, one which left her with magic powers that she must keep hidden.

If you loved the friendship dynamic of the ACOTAR inner circle and
morally gray characters, you’ll find something similar in this dark gothic fantasy.

Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco

Book #1 in the Kingdom of the Wicked trilogy (completed)

Published: October 2020

Spice Rating:  This book has no spice

As the series progresses you can expect it to be Mild - Medium (🌶️🌶️.🌶️ - 🌶️🌶️🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Death, Gore, Self-harm, Violence, Body horror, Murder (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

“You always have the power of choice, even when those choices seem limited.”

A lot of the elements you enjoyed in ACOTAR can also be found in Kingdom of the Wicked.

Sister relationships? Check.
Murder? Check.
Dark magic? Check.

Slow burn romance? Check.

This book follows Emilia and her sister Vittoria, who are witches living among humans in Italy.

When Vittoria is murdered, Emilia enlists the help of one of the Princes of Hell to avenge her beloved sister.

With demons, vampires, witches, and so much more, if you’re a fan of all things
paranormal, I know you’ll be obsessed with this book.

This book is a wild ride full of twists and turns, mystery, betrayals, and a cliffhanger that will have you immediately reaching for the next installment in the series.

Although Kingdom of the Wicked is considered
Young Adult Fantasy, the next two books in the trilogy are more New Adult, so you’ll find the series gets spicier and heavier with each book.

House of Blood and Earth by Sarah J. Maas

Book #1 in the Crescent City series

Published: March 2020

Spice Rating: Mild (🌶️🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Attempted suicide, Death, Misogyny, Sexual Content, Slavery, Violence, War (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

“Through love, all is possible.”

If ACOTAR has left a Sarah J. Maas-shaped hole in your heart, the best way to fill it might just be with more from Sarah J. Maas!

If you couldn’t get enough of the sizzling romance in ACOTAR and the epic world-building, then the Crescent City series is the perfect next read for you.

The series kicks off with Bryce Quinlan, who finds herself at the center of the investigation when her best friend is murdered by a demon.

This book has themes of power, romance, loss, and a dark, gritty underworld setting. Plus, it’s full of amazing tropes like enemies-to-lovers and forced proximity, as well as LGBTQIA+ representation.

The best part is there’s plenty more where that came from—not only has Sarah announced Crescent City 4, she also has another completed series, Throne of Glass, for you to get stuck into next. TOG is eight books long, so that’s sure to keep you occupied for a while!

If you listened to the dramatized audiobook of the ACOTAR series and loved it, then you’re in luck because the Crescent City series is also available in this format.

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Book #1 in the Blood and Ash series

Published: March 2020

Spice Rating: Mild - Medium (🌶️🌶️.🌶️ - 🌶️🌶️🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Gore, Death, Murder, Sexual assault, Violence, Abuse, Self-harm, (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

“Nothing is ever simple. And when it is, it's rarely every worth it.”

From Blood and Ash is the perfect post-ACOTAR romantasy fix, with swoon-worthy romance and an action-packed plot that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

This story follows Poppy, who’s the chosen one in a prophecy that she knows nothing about, and her royal guard, Hawk.

It’s a gripping read packed with danger, mystery, and passion, much like ACOTAR. The world in this book is complex and well-developed, making it the perfect book to get lost in.

Serpent and Dove by Shelby Mahurin

Book #1 in the Serpent & Dove trilogy (completed)

Published: September 2019

Spice Rating: Extra Mild (🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Gore, Domestic Violence, Self-harm, Murder (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

“I was no one's sacrifice. Not then. Not now. Not ever.”

If your favorite Acheron sister is Nesta, this is the perfect next read for you, as Serpent and Dove’s main character, Lou, has very similar traits.

Serpent and Dove is the first in a series about witches and witch hunters. The story follows Louise, who’s a witch on the run, willing to do anything it takes just to survive. Things take a turn when she meets Reid, and is faced with a choice which could change her life forever.

This book has some of those all-time favorite tropes that are also found in ACOTAR, including enemies-to-lovers, one bed, a
strong female heroine, and a group of friends and side characters that you’ll grow to love.

If you’re missing that angsty kind of star-crossed lover plot, be sure to make room for this fast-paced series on your TBR.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

Book #1 in the Cursebreakers trilogy (completed)

Published: January 2019

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Death, Gun violence, Kidnapping, Gore, Murder, Decapitation, War (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

“Failure isn’t absolute.”

If you’re craving another Beauty and the Beast retelling like ACOTAR, make sure this one’s at the top of your TBR list.

The beauty of retellings is that you can pick up different books based on the same fairytale and get a completely different take on the story.

This book stays closer to the classic tale, as a curse is placed on a young prince who's forced to relive the autumn of his eighteenth year until he finds someone to fall in love with and break the curse.

You definitely won’t be able to put this book down once you start reading it, this I can promise!

When you fall in love with a book, it can leave a mark on you, making you think about it for days, weeks, months, or even years after. You might find yourself rereading it or craving something similar so you can experience a fresh story full of elements you loved about the book you were initially obsessed with.

For you, that series just happened to be ACOTAR. I hope at least one of these six books will be of interest to you, become your next addition, and cure your ACOTAR hangover. Happy reading!
