By: Jordan Fleming Photo By: @a.o.tales

Amber and I are BACK this October for a fun new readalong! We're about to start our monthly discussion for our August Adult book (recommended by those 18+), Masters Of Death by Olivie Blake!

As a reminder, from now on, our monthly discussions will be both here on the OwlCrate blog AND on The Nest! Go check out Amber's discussion that will be full of fun extra content!

On each day we'll read a section of Masters Of Death, both on the blog and in The Nest's group, and then discuss in the comments our theories and predictions. This means there will be spoilers for each section! Beware!

Just a reminder that this will be a SPOILER discussion for chapters 19-22 of Masters Of Death , so make sure you read or are finished this section before continuing.

So how are you all enjoying my new favorite book?

Chapter 19:

Fox doesn't want to answer the door but does, as apparently it's rude to keep an arch angel waiting. Gabrial and Raphael tell him that they've found Death, or rather his demon-god captor and that they need Fox's help.

To play the game. Fox says no, vehemently no. The archangels find out that Brandt has one of their keys he uses to travel to different realities which is a no-no but he's willing to take Fox.

Oh and Fox needs to play the game like a tournament and also find Death's ledger...and he needs to bring the ghost -Tom.

Fox answers maybe and that the archangels, collectively, are the worst.

They know.

The group argues and Tom says that he won't go without Vi and really he can't go anyway because he's tied to the house. Isis has an idea goes to make a phone call with Vi and Tom,  leaving Brandt, Cal, Mayra and Fox.

•·················•·················•

Brandt explains more fully the game, the tournament, and Death's ledger to them. Isis warns Vi not to play the game as the risks are too great.

Chapter 20:

As it turns out, Vi and Isis called in their immortal meeting group of reinforcements. Lupo, Louisa, and Sly are now apart of the "break Tom the ghost out of the house" brigade.

They look over the house's contract and find an Immortal clause. Tom can give over the house to anyone he chooses to keep in trust until he's back from their mission to master (I mean rescue) Death.

Louisa is surprised and a little jealous she's not playing the immortal game. There used to be another immortal that came to the immortal meet ups that had played the game...and one. A mermaid by the name of Elaine who ran away with a god. A mermaid that just so also happened to be called Lainey...

wait...Tom's Lainey?

Chapter 21:

Tom is coming to terms with, you know, being a ghost and his ex girlfriend being a mermaid. Tom won't go rescue/master Death without Vi and he gets her to admit she likes him and wants to help.

So Vi agrees to go.

•·················•·················•

Isis and Mayra discuss the king of demons and Isis promises to not tell anyone that Mayra, has in fact, played the game.

•·················•·················•

Brandt and Fox argue. Brandt wants free but Fox can't trust that he won't leave if he's not shackled. They argue about Brandt leaving Fox in the past, and about Death, and about an empty mark in Brandt's copy of Death's ledger. A game Death played that Fox may know something but Brandt does not. And they agree that the past has passed.

Chapter 22:

1833

Brandt and Fox find Death at the tables. Death admonishes Brandt for bringing Fox, a mortal to the immortal game. He tells them to leave and warns Brandt about his ledger and the thefts he commits.

About the watch Brandt stole from Time. Fox doesn't want to leave but as a mortal, has no choice. Brandt suggests that when they get home, they can be rid of one another. Fox agrees.

•·················•·················•

Later, Fox is kissing a dairy maid when Brandt shows up asking if Fox has seen Death lately. He's not and doesn't want to speak with Brandt. Brandt tells Fox about a goddess who wants something from Brandt, but that he can't tell Fox, and he'll see him next month.

•·················•·················•

Later, Fox asks Brandt what he gives the goddess but Brandt of course doesn't answer. He offers Fox a bite of his apple (immortality) but Fox refuses and they discuss mortality. Fox asks Brandt to come back more often. Twice a month.

•·················•·················•

Elsewhere a goddess trapped by the gods asks Brandt what she's brought him and he gives her another story about the godson of Death. They discuss Fox and the goddess laments with pity that she must take from Fox.

•·················•·················•

Fox floats in the water while Brandt writes. He asks him what he writes and it's everything and nothing. He asks him what his goddess asks of him, and whether it's too much before reminding Brandt that he's his.

•·················•·················•

Brandt returns to his goddess who asks about Fox. She sents him back to him but Brandt wonders if her kindness is a gift or a curse.

When, really, it's both.

I'm not...entirely sure what's going on but I love it!

 Questions:

  1. Do you think they will master Death?
  2.

     Will Fox play the game?
  3. ...do you think there are any happy endings around here?
