The story continues...

Chapter 5:
Joan runs and in another room finds Ruth and her gran. Ruth tells her that the rest of the family is already dead. Gran tells Ruth to go pry open the window on the other side of the room and as she does so Gran reveals to Joan that soon she will come into a special power, one the rest of the Hunts don’t have, and that she must tell no one about it. She placing a gold necklace over Joan’s wrist. Gran passes, leaving Joan and Ruth to try to escape through the narrow window. Joan manages to squeeze through, but before Ruth is able monster hunters break into the room and kill her.

Joan flees down the lawn, seeing her only chance to hide in the hedge maze. In it she comes across a monster hunter who has cornered Aaron, but before he can strike, Joan uses the candle holder in her hand to knock him out. Aaron knows the way out, and in an unlikely turn of events an Oliver and a Hunt are cooperating.

Chapter 6:
They make their way across a park to an old run down hotel that Joan remembers visiting with her gran. They get a room with two beds, and lucky for Joan, although the hotel isn’t exactly pristine there is a first aid kit. After getting cleaned up and having a shower Aaron reveals that there is something wrong about what happened that night. The Olivers know when deaths are going to happen and no one knew about tonight. Although it feels wrong, Joan agrees they have to go back in time to try to prevent the night from happening.

Chapter 7:
The next morning they head to what Aaron calls the Pit, but in reality is Buckingham Palace. He explains that you aren’t able to travel back in time to a date you already exist in, so they need to travel back about twenty years to avoid the risk, and therefore need to take twenty years of life from other people. They have come to Buckingham Palace to steal a little bit of time from a lot of people - tourists specifically, to avoid drawing attention. Aaron demonstrates his technique, but as Joan gets the hang of it they find monster hunters have detected them. They run, and although Joan is unsure if she stole enough time to get back twenty years, she takes Aaron’s hand and they jump.

 Questions:

  1. What do you think Joan's special new power is going to be?
  2. Do you think Joan was able to steal enough time? Or do you think they could end up in a timeline where Joan already exists? What do you think the repercussions would be?
  3. Why do you think the Olivers didn't know what was going to happen that night?
  4. How do you think Joan and Aaron will try to prevent the night from happening from so far back in the past?
