'Threads That Bind' Book Club Readalong Day 4!

By: Jordan Fleming

Amber and I are BACK this July for a fun new readalong! We're about to start our monthly discussion for our June "If The Fates Allow" book, Threads That Bind by Kika Hatzopoulou!

As a reminder, from now on, our monthly discussions will be both here on the OwlCrate blog AND on The Nest! Go check out Amber's discussion that will be full of fun extras like bookish charades, shelf scavenger hunts and coloring pages!

On each day we'll read a section of Threads That Bind both on the blog and in The Nest's group, and then discuss in the comments our theories and predictions. This means there will be spoilers for each section! Beware!

Just a reminder that this will be a SPOILER discussion for chapters 15-19 of Threads That Bind, so make sure you read or are finished this section before continuing.

Chapter 15:

Edei and Io enter the Muse's home where Io asks them questions that they answer and asks yet more, finally unveiling from them that they were the ones who put the hit out on the initial women and paid Horatio Long. But when she ultimately asks how she can save the wraith women, they inform her that she can't.

As for weeks, the only art they've been able to produce is a poem about how Io herself...will end the world.

Chapter 16:

Edei and Io leave the Muse's house and make for the souk where they are followed by a Phobos-born man who accosts Edei and Io and strikes them still with fear. He asks them what their business was with the Nine and whether they learned anything about the wraith women. He asks if they know who has made them.

They both say no but he does not believe them and the Phobos-born rains his power on her until she screams.

Edei takes the opportunity to strike the man in the head with a piece of wood and he flees. Edei is worried about Io but she's fine...as she holds tight to the thread of the man who attacked them...

Chapter 17:

It continues to hold the Phobos-born's thread as she, Edei, Chimdi and Nico make their way to the Treatro Blanco, an exclusive opera house, where the man is inside.

They sneak inside with help from Nico and find the Phobos-born man on the stage with non-other than the Alante police commissioner, running for Mayor, Luc Saint-Yves. He makes a big speech about bringing humans and other-born together and utilizing them for things like special police forces before telling the crowd that it's okay to like other-born because he's in love with one.

And he invites to the stage...Thais Ora...his fiance.

Chapter 18:

Io is shocked and so is Edei who asks her if that is her sister. She nods and Edei promises not to tell Bianca about this. After a few more moments onstage, Luc invites Aris Lefteriou up with him. He's the Phobos-born. Head of Luc's security.

The group decides to follow Luc and Thais but when they get to the alley, Luc and Thais are gone in a car and Io sees a figure holding a gun.

Chapter 19:

It's Rosa holding the gun and she's mad that Io cut her thread of familial love for her grandmother on the night of the break in. Io suggests that Rosa get her back by shooting her in the arm but Edei dissuades her.

As voices sound behind them in the alley, Rosa grabs Io, pulls her away and tells her to run.

Rosa guides Edei and Io to a homeless shelter full of pods for folks whose homes flood during the monsoon season. They hide in one and hear Aris's voice searching. They hear him talk to his underlings about the people they're targeting and they recognize Edei as Fortuna. Aris mentions that the next victim will be Bianca and Io realizes that it's Saint-Yves that has been behind the wraiths.

Well that was a fun jaunt through infested waters. I hope everyone is ready for Day 5!

 Questions:

  1. 🧐Do you think the gods are alive?
  2. 🎯 Why do you think Saint-Yves is targeting these people?
  3. 🧵 How true do you think Edie’s statement was when he told Io she could decide her own fate?
