The book selection for July features a fairy tale retelling of the classic Snow White story with a twist. In Sleep Like Death, we meet Eve, capable of communicating with animals and conjuring weapons, and trained to kill the dreaded Knight that cursed one of her mothers. As Eve gets ready to face him and stop his torment over the villagers, she notices her mother the Queen acting strangely and talking to herself, and she must figure out a way to save her mother and the kingdom before it’s too late.

How did the idea for Sleep Like Death first come to you?
I have always loved fairytales, especially ones that have horror elements. I knew as soon as I was done writing Cinderella Is Dead that I wanted to do another fairytale retelling. Snow White seemed like a good choice!
How would you describe your style of writing?
I think it’s evolved over the years but I’d best describe it as flexible and character driven. I outline but always allow the story to take me where it needs to go.
What's one line or quote in Sleep Like Death that you're really proud of writing?
I like the thinly veiled threat that a certain character says to Eve. “Sleep like death consume. Until hands and lips touch. Strike me down, dearest Eve, and mourn forever.”
How did you come up with the title for Sleep Like Death?
I wanted something that matched the feeling and cadence of Cinderella Is Dead but also spoke to the message in this new story. Sleep Like Death was the best fit.
What new projects can we look forward to seeing from you next?
I’m in the process of writing a graphic novel and another YA horror out in 2025. In the middle grade space, my third Vanquishers book comes out October 8th of this year and I’m writing a new middle grade mystery series.

How did you develop your art style?
I really enjoy moody lighting, curving forms, and rendered details. I try to use those elements in my work when I can. I like to capture some kind of emotional quality in my work. As for developing that, It's a lot of trial and error and looking at other art that is doing that well. I'm very methodical, I fear.
What are some of your favorite characters/fandoms/books/media to create artwork for?
I love working in the fantasy genre. What I enjoy painting the most is completely up to my mood that week and what I am reading. I will often stop painting from a favorite fandom for years and then suddenly want to return to that fandom again. Obviously from my online presences Holly Black's Cruel Prince and Tracy Deonn's Legenborn are dear to me. But there are so many great characters out there that I bounce from one book to the next when painting.
What’s your favorite piece of advice that you’ve been given that you would like to pass on to new artists?
Nurture community with other creatives. Then you have a world of advice and experiences to pull from. Perspective, advice, options- you see it all through other lived experiences and that is priceless. Plus you can help each other share in the joys and setbacks of being an artist. Or just beg your friends to draw your favs. ^_~

What is OwlCrate ?
OwlCrate is a monthly subscription service that delivers newly published hardcover novels and a collection of bookish goodies to your doorstep. Our Young Adult boxes are designed for ages 14 and up but, as we always say, you are never too old for YA!
Each Book & Goodies box contains a newly released hardcover novel plus 4-5 bookish goodies inspired by the book and other fandoms. We also offer a Book Only option. All books are signed by the author and have exclusive covers and design elements. We often include exclusive bonus content from the author as well!
All of the books chosen for this subscription are of various types of fantasy. This can include high fantasy, paranormal, science fiction, magical realism, urban fantasy, and more!

What do I do if one of my items arrived damaged?
We are sorry to hear one of your items was damaged in shipping. We do our best to make sure everything is packed safely and securely in your box but things can get bumped about in transit.
Damaged Item:
If you have a damaged item, please send a clear photo or two of the damages to support@owlcrate.com. We will be happy to send a replacement.
Damaged Books:
Though we aim to send out books in the best condition possible, small dings are very common to any books shipped, and even those found on the shelves in bookstores. Books are shipped many times - from the printer to us, and then from us to you. If you feel your book is damaged, please send an email and a photo of the issue to customer support and we will be happy to take a look.
When emailing support, please let us know the email address attached to your account so we can easily find your order and shipping address.
