Two chosen ones are faced with one unthinkable choice in A Fate So Cold, the first in a blockbuster fantasy duology, sizzling with a devastating romance.

For most of the year, Summer reigns peacefully over Alderland. Then, for six brutal weeks, Winter rages, obliterating towns and wreaking casualties. Magicians bond with powerful wands of Summer to defend the nation, a duty that costs many their lives.

Domenic Barrow never wanted such responsibility—but destiny hasn’t granted him a choice. The greatest Summer wand has awakened for the first time in a century, warning that an icy cataclysm looms on the horizon. And despite his reputation as the least suited of his classmates, the wand chooses Domenic to wield it.

Ellery Caldwell spent years striving to be a perfect Summer magician—and burying her fears of her own power. But her worst suspicions are proven true when she accidentally creates the first-ever Winter wand.

Now, as the unprecedented Chosen Two, Domenic and Ellery must thwart the oncoming cataclysm together. But this is no love story. It’s a tragedy.

    A Fate So Cold ❄️☀️

For most of the year, Summer reigns. Then, for a few weeks, Winter arrives — bringing monsters, destruction, and a whole lot of trouble with it.

But what fascinated me most was the magic system.

Here, a magician doesn’t simply choose a wand. It’s more like the wand chooses the magician — and that choice can shape the rest of their life.

And these aren’t just pieces of wood à la Harry Potter 😅 Every wand has its own personality, its own peculiarities, and its own price. Bonding with some of them can have unpleasant — and sometimes irreversible — consequences for their wielder.

There are also only a limited number of wands. If none of them bonds with you by a certain age, you’ll never become a fully fledged magician. Essentially, you’re stuck being a bit of a “not-quite-magician” forever.

That makes the main characters especially interesting to follow, because in a world where everyone is used to magic following certain rules, something suddenly appears that shouldn’t even exist.

I really loved the way the authors put a fresh spin on the classic “chosen one” trope. At first, everything feels familiar: magic, destiny, someone fated to save the world… But it quickly becomes clear that things are a little more complicated than that.

I also loved the concept of this world: an almost endless Summer followed by a short but deadly Winter. It’s such a simple idea, yet it creates a wonderfully atmospheric and unusual fantasy setting.

    And that ending… 😶

    This is only the first…

    Gorgeous Art

I love the art on this one and the binding is so sturdy. It's a hefty, well-made book with (I'm assuming) sewn binding.

    Gorgeous Book!

Absolutely love the cover and dust jacket artwork and design of this book! In fact, design-wise, it's probably my favorite Owlcrate book that I own. While the plot is somewhat thin, it was an enjoyable read, nevertheless.
