Sophie (she/her) is an artist who runs an etsy and print shop and does tatoo commissions Art, in every form, has always been a part of her life; there hasn't been a time where she wasn't making art. As she grew up, art started to become more of a career path rather than just a hobby for her.
The shift in her relationship with art, led her to pick up reading. Reading had been a casual hobby of hers ever since she was a kid, but she was never really involved with the book community nor felt as though she had anything to contribute to it. This changed when reading became something really important in her life. It wasn’t until she started getting into the social side of literature that she realized that all the book art that she had been drawing over the years had a space where they could be appreciated.
She has always gravitated towards more fantasy art and literature, so those themes and visuals have always crept their way into her work one way or another. She finally belonged in a space where she could combine her love for both art and books which led her to continue to share her book art and refine her work.
To create her art she uses everything from acrylic to ceramics, but her most well-known pieces are all made digitally. For her digital work, she uses an app called Procreate which takes the same fundamentals of analogue drawing and painting and translates them to a digital format.
Where do you find inspiration
for your designs?
Mostly from all the books I read! I absolutely love all things fantasy and dark academia, which are definitely two prominent themes in my work. My work is character-focused, so I typically draw inspiration from the characters I’m reading about or engaging with. I'm also a huge admirer of the Art Nouveau movement, so that also plays a huge role in both my analog and digital work in terms of visual inspiration and rendering techniques.
Do you have a favorite piece of art you've created to date? What makes it special to you?
I've recently been working on a cover design and interior illustrations for author Sofia E.A. Morrison for her fantasy book Two Sides of One Tarnished Coin, and from the moment I heard about the project, I knew it was going to be one of my favorites to work on. From the complex and original female main characters to the high fantasy setting, the literary and visual inspirations and themes fell directly in line with the kind of art that I make.
This project was a glance into the kinds of work that I want to be a part of in the future. I’m just really proud of the way it turned out; between the composition, continuous illustration that seamlessly flows into the back cover, and color palette, it’s become one of my favorite projects that I’ve been a part of.
