Claudia Redl (she/her) is an artist and illustrator based in Austria. She has always loved drawing, even as a child, but never actively pursued it until COVID hit and she had just started university. Since she always loved reading, when she found herself stuck at home all day, with only online lectures and a lot more free time than she expected, she started creating art of her favourite book characters and sharing it online.

"It kind of just snowballed from there, but I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. I love what I do and all the amazingly talented people I get to work with.”

Most of her art is digital and made using Clip Studio Paint, and she enjoys creating character art and foil designs. Occasionally, she also dabbles in oil painting.

Where do you find inspiration
for your designs?

As you can probably tell, I am a huge bookworm. Most of my inspiration comes from stories I read, songs I listen to, but also other artists I admire.

I am lucky enough to have made friends with other amazing artists in this community, and their work inspires me every day.

I could probably ramble about all my insanely creative friends forever if you let me, so I’ll refrain from doing that, but they’re all amazing, and I don’t know where I’d be without their support.

Do you have a favorite piece of art you've created to date? What makes it special to you?

One of my all time favourite pieces I did is an Illustration I created for Carissa Broadbent for the release of her book The Songbird and the Heart of Stone. I’m sure we all have our favourite authors, and Carissa has been one of mine for years now, so getting the opportunity to work with her still feels unreal to me. And I absolutely love how the piece turned out in the end.

It was also a bit of a full circle moment for me, because when I started offering commissions, my first project I got hired for was fanart of two of Carissa's characters. That commission started my career as a bookish Illustrator, and back then, I would’ve never imagined that I’d one day end up working with her on a project. Like I said, I really turned fangirling into a career lol.

“I’ve only worked on one project with OwlCrate so far, but I had a great time working together and absolutely love how it turned out in the end! Everyone who worked on the book (Gothikana) did such an amazing job!”

What are some of your favorite
books or authors?

Oh boi, I have a never ending list, but I’ll try to keep it relatively short here.

Carissa Broadbent (I love all her books, she could probably write a grocery list and I’d buy the special edition), Rebecca Ross (I loved her Letters of Enchantment duology), V.E. Schwab (A Darker Shade of Magic will always be one of the first books on my list of recommendations), Rachel Gillig, Ali Hazelwood, Scarlett St. Clair, Jay Kristoff, Sarah A. Parker, Margaret Rogerson, Tahereh Mafi, Kristen Ciccarelli, Sabaa Tahir...
