Summer is approaching, which means more sun, more iced coffee, and, hopefully, more time to read. I’ve found it’s best to create a priority list before the season starts so I don’t spend all of my time rereading old favorites (though I will make time for that, too).
For the summer of 2026, I have put together a list of popular books that I will be reading and/or recommending to my friends, so we can all get caught up on the latest and greatest in romance, thriller/horror, and fantasy.
I moonlight as a bookseller, and these are the books that have all of the customers chatting away. We can barely keep them on the shelves! This summer reading list has something for everyone.
Get ready to be the most popular person at the beach when you pull out one of these top reads.
Which Of These Books Will You Read This Summer?
Daggermouth by H.M. Wolfe
Book #1 in The Heart series
Published: July 2026
Genre: Dystopian Romance
Tropes: Enemies to Lovers, Forced Marriage, Morally Grey Characters, Forbidden Romance
Spice Level: Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Violence, Gun Violence, Torture, Sexual Assault, Child Abuse, Suicidal Thoughts (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)
If you haven’t heard about Daggermouth by H.M. Wolfe, I fear you may be living under a rock (or at least aren’t as chronically online as I am).
This book hit the scene in December 2025, was immediately devoured, and subsequently received a traditional publishing deal so fast it made my head spin. I’ve worked in publishing, so it’s blowing my mind that the author secured a deal so quickly and that the “new” version is being published in July 2026.
Usually, it takes years between edits and production and all of the boring backend stuff. But the publisher knows readers who didn’t manage to snag a self-published copy are eager to add this book to their shelves, and they’re delivering.
Now, what is all the hype about? Morally grey enemies-to-lovers, of course. And when I say enemies-to-lovers, I mean it!
Shadera (our FMC) was raised to be an assassin, and when she’s unsuccessful in killing the president’s son (Greyson), she’s forced to marry him (naturally). But he’s hiding secrets of his own and stuck in a marriage that’s more a game of survival.
Will they end up killing each other or burning the entire corrupt society to the ground? This is sure to be one of the biggest books of this summer! You won’t want to miss it.
The MASH Up by Laura Marie Meyers
Standalone
Published: July 2026
Genre: RomCom
Tropes: Forced proximity, Brother’s Best Friend, Alternate Reality
Spice Level: Medium (🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Anxiety, Death of a Parent (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)
Do you remember the game M.A.S.H? It was the main event of indoor recess when I was growing up, and I recently rediscovered my love for it during a nostalgic movie-and-craft night while watching Clueless (for those wondering, I will be marrying Robert Pattinson this summer and moving to Italy to live in a shack with our pet giraffe.)
When I stumbled across this upcoming book, I knew it would be the perfect summer read. Ruby is our main character, and when she makes an unexpected wish one night, she wakes up inside a M.A.S.H. game from seventh grade! Truly stunned, no one has thought of this before.
Now Ruby is living her childhood dream, except for one little problem: her happily-ever-after is supposed to be her brother’s annoying best friend, Penn. Sparks do not start flying when she encounters him in this dream world. Instead, things are the same as before, sarcasm and zero romance.
However, Ruby is desperate to get home, and she thinks the only way is by “completing” the game, and that means winning Penn’s heart. Odds she can do it without falling in love herself?
The Missed Connection by Tia Williams
Standalone
Published: June 2026
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Tropes: Second Chance, Right Person Wrong Time, Slow Burn
Spice Level: Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Sexual Content, Grief, Misogyny (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)
I will read anything Tia Williams writes, be that contemporary romance, magical realism, or even a grocery list. I read Seven Days in June a few years ago and haven’t stopped thinking about it at least once a month since, and don’t even get me started on the YA follow-up!
This is all to say, The Missed Connections is at the top of my summer reading list, and I will be devouring it as soon as it hits the shelves.
The premise: Sasha is on her way to Paris for work when the Italian man of her dreams sits next to her on the plane. They hit it off but miss the chance to exchange contact information, sending Sasha on a hunt to find her would-be soulmate.
Enlisting a work friend to help, Sasha accidentally emails the entire company the predicament she’s in, causing employees worldwide to start looking for this stranger from the plane.
Enter the smoldering detective Sasha hires, and we’ve got a love triangle! This has everything I want from a top summer read: Paris, serendipitous meet-cutes, and a love that criss-crosses the ocean.
The Book Witch by Meg Shaffer
Standalone
Published: April 2026
Genre: Contemporary Romance with some Magical Realism
Tropes: Forbidden Love, Race Against Time, Magical Familiar (a cat!), Books About Books
Spice Level: Extra Mild (🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Grief, Death, Death of a Parent, Gaslighting, Abandonment, Violence, Fire (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)
When I was younger, I read a book about a princess who lived inside a storybook, playing out the plot whenever a reader opened it and running between the pages when it was closed.
One day, she escaped the book and entered the real world. For some reason, this story has stuck with me over the years (even though I have no recollection of its title).
This book is technically the opposite of the book younger me loved, yet I can’t help but be enamored.
In The Book Witch, the FMC, Rainy, can jump into books and interact with the characters. I know! Talk about the ideal life. The only issue is that she can only stay there long enough to fix whatever has befallen the book, and then she has to leave. Personally, I don’t think I’d have the willpower!
And, well, Rainy apparently has her moments, too, because she might be falling in love with a fictional detective, and she might have been warned that if she visits him again, she’ll be kicked out of her coven.
She’s doing her best, truly, but when her grandfather disappears, she doesn’t know who else to turn to but her fictional detective. As they race through classic books to find clues, what will happen to Rainy, the detective, and her grandfather?
How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates by Shailee Thompson
Standalone
Published: February 2026
Genre: Thriller meets a RomCom
Tropes: Final Girl, Slasher Film Tropes, Forced Proximity
Spice Level: Mild (🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Sexual Content, Murder, Blood, Violence, Injury, Misogyny (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)
Have you ever wondered what would happen if a rom com and a slasher had a baby? Well, this is it!
Jamie and her bestie are at (yet another) speed dating event when the unthinkable happens: Jamie actually hits it off with two of the men! Oh, and multiple participants are murdered when the lights go out.
Luckily for those who didn’t immediately run up the stairs and into a trap, Jamie has encyclopedic knowledge of slasher films (and rom-coms), to the point that she has a poster in her bathroom with all the rules for making it to be a Final Girl.
Armed with this knowledge, Jamie leads the group consisting of her best friend, the two guys she would like to see again, and an assortment of other speed date participants through the maze-like building as they try to stay alive. But people keep going rogue and ending up dead.
Jamie is now receiving love notes from the murderer, and the guys she’s into won’t stop trying to one-up each other.
Despite the death and gore, this is a great summer read, specifically on audio, because there’s something lighthearted in the way the author writes.
If you’re going on a road trip, turn on the audiobook and get lost in this story of love and survival. Just beware that the “slashing” sounds are incredibly realistic!
Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman
Book #1 in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series
Published: December 2025
Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Tropes: Survival Game, Apocalypse, Found Family
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Violence, Gore, Death, Cursing, Murder, Crude Humor (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)
This series has been flying off the shelves at the bookstore I work at, and I, for one, will be taking the summer to devour all eight books.
Imagine this: you’re a guy dressed in your boxers in the front yard of your house, trying to get your cheating ex-girlfriend's cat out of a tree, when all of a sudden the world collapses around you.
There you are, boxers on, cat in your arms (that you can inexplicably understand now), and a contestant on a reality TV show hosted by aliens that have just taken over Earth. I know, it’s a lot to wrap your head around.
This is exactly where Carl finds himself at the beginning of the story, and luckily, we get to follow along as he makes his way through video game-esque levels where the prize is staying alive for a while longer.
Dungeon Crawler Carl was rereleased in 2025 with a brand-new cover and has found a cult following, with book number eight just released in May.
As a sci-fi/fantasy series with page counts of 800+, it may seem intimidating, but you’ll soon be flying through the pages that, instead of having dense paragraphs, include lines such as “Congratulations! You’ve earned your first achievement: Crazy Cat Lady.”
An additional fun fact: this series is so popular among sci-fi and non-sci-fi readers alike, a BackerKit campaign was launched in April for a tabletop RPG based on the book, and it raised over $3.5 million in just a few hours!
I, Medusa by Ayana Gray
Standalone
Published: November 2025
Genre: Fantasy
Tropes:
Spice Level: Mythology Retelling, Feminist Rage, Villain Origin Story
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Sexual Assault, Abuse, Racism, Slavery (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)
We all know Medusa, yes? The mythological woman with snakes on her head that turns you to stone if you look at them? Some say she’s a villain, some an icon.
Ayana Gray has a different take: what if, instead of a monster, Meddy was a young girl training as a priestess under Athena when she caught the eye of the wrong God? Poseidon sends her life into a tailspin, culminating in her being punished by having her locs turned into snakes for a crime she didn’t commit.
Left with nothing to do but pick up the pieces of her life and redefine herself, Meddy becomes a vigilante, writing her own ending to her story. Which, to me, is icon behavior. Her story may be heartbreaking in parts, but her righteous feminine rage is profoundly felt through the pages.
The customers at the bookstore I work at rave about this book, and I will definitely be taking time this summer to catch up. Truly, what’s better than an FMC who takes back her power and agency, and possibly takes out a few bad men along the way?
Strange Houses by Uketsu
Book #1 in the Strange Houses series
Published: June 2025 (in the US)
Genre: Horror
Tropes: Unreliable Narrator, Puzzle Mystery, Domestic Horror
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Child abuse/death, Murder, Suicide, Abortion (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)
Despite what this list may lead you to believe, I am not a horror girly. I will not go see the latest scary movie with you, nor will I read the latest cannibal thriller my coworkers rave about. However, I am very glad I took a chance on the genre and read the incredibly unsettling yet incredibly popular book by the masked Japanese author Uketsu.
It was a TikTok that really got me. I mean, the first two pages contain a floor plan of a house, then the unsettling question, “Do you see anything strange about it?” And yes, yes, I did. The author goes on to say, “Those off details pile up and link together to lead to one inescapable truth. A truth so terrifying, you won't want to believe it.” I have chills just reliving that! Clearly, Uketsu is a talented writer if a floor plan can give me the heebie jeebies.
I devoured this book in one sitting last summer and am looking forward to doing the same with the next book in the series, Strange Buildings, this summer.
Though I wouldn’t recommend reading this before staying at someone else’s house. Just trust me on that.
Problematic Summer Romance by Ali Hazelwood
Book #2 in the Not in Love series
Published: May 2025
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Tropes: Brother’s Best Friend, “I’m too old for you”, Forced Proximity
Spice Level: Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Sexual Content, Age gap (15 years), Childhood Poverty, Death of a Parent (off page), Food Poisoning, Grief, Infidelity (not between the MCs), Pregnancy (conversations & side character) (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)
Not in Love is one of my all-time favorite Ali Hazelwood books, and I was so nervous for Problematic Summer Romance because I didn’t see how it could live up to its predecessor. I shouldn’t have doubted Queen Ali, though, because Maya and Conor’s journey was exquisite.
It says it all in the name, but it truly is a (problematic) summer romance that you will devour every last morsel of.
Maya is reintroduced to Conor while going through a (very) bad breakup in college, and he just so happens to save the day with a bit of fake dating. It’s been a few years, and many times, almost crossing that line, and now they’re stuck in Italy together for Maya’s brother and Conor’s best friend’s wedding.
With nothing to do but enjoy the hot Italian summer days (and possibly save the wedding from a “curse”), Maya and Conor might just have to finally confront all of the tangled feelings that exist between them and decide once and for all how they’re going to move forward.
Whether you’re looking for something creepy or something spicy, romantic date nights or battles for your life, I hope you found it in this list. These books are the perfect summer reads, and I can’t wait to dive in.
Be sure to bookmark this blog, so that if you find yourself wondering “what books should I read this summer?”, you have the answer ready and waiting.
If this list has inspired you to create your own summer 2026 TBR list, share it on The Nest (and tag me Courtney | bookmarkedtbr)! I’m always looking for more books to add to my (already endless) stack. Happy reading!
