Dark romance - a little taboo, a lot of (objective) disturbingness, a load of unhinged shenanigans, and a ton of toxically attractive romance. That's what draws many readers to this deliciously dark genre; it's for sure what drew me in, and let me tell you, to this day, it has me in a chokehold.
Here are some dark romance books I recommend. Some of these books are more "beginner-friendly" than others, but don't let that fool you into thinking they're any less spicy. Without further ado, please enter the dark side of romance reading at your own risk; be careful, you may (and, let's be real, probably will) become addicted.
Please note: all books listed below contain content suitable for an adult (18+) audience and should therefore not be in the hands of minors. The content warnings listed for each of the books may not cover all content in the book.
Dark Romance Books For Beginners
Valor Amidst Decay (Amongst Desolation #1)
"I won't expect anything less than savage in this world. Even if I have to be a monster to protect my own.”
Spice Rating: 🌶️ (Extra Mild)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
gore, blood, graphic violence, mental health, mentions of abusive ex, mentions of sexual assault, attempted sexual assault (not between MCs), zombies, murder, suicide/self sacrifice, organized crime, stalking, violence involving children (death of zombie child and normal children).
Valor Amidst Decay by A.J. Sommers is about a woman's journey to find her way through life and the zombie apocalypse that leads her to her found family.
Dahlia Danaher is returning from vacation when the world goes up in flames. Unboarding a plane shouldn't take that long, but when she's finally able to get off the plane…it feels unsettlingly quiet in the LAX airport. That's until the Undead pop out and groan surprise, and all chaos breaks loose.
Running from the Undead, Dahlia helps a child and an Asian aunt escape, which leads them to Ren Ryūko. Ren is waiting for his aunt and nephew to show up when he starts hearing news about the Undead. Willing to do anything for his family, Ren has to go out and save them from more than one type of danger.
With the Undead rising, nothing and no one will ever be the same, but sometimes things must be lost so they can be found…
Will I ever stop recommending Valor Amidst Decay? Nope! This book had me hooked from the first word. I vividly remember wandering through Costco while reading this masterpiece.
This was my first foray into reading horror - I probably shouldn't have tried reading this in the late nighttime hours, but it wasn't too scary for a starter book. I can't wait to see how it all unfolds in Book 2.

Leather & Lark (The Ruinous Love trilogy #2/Standalone)
"I don’t just want to hear her laugh, I need to earn it. Every time I gain a little ground, I want more. I want to break out of the shade and back into her light. Without even realizing it, I’ve become addicted to it. To her.”
Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Hot)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
explicit sexual content, murder, arts and crafts with body parts, graphic violence, mentions of sexual assault, weapons, serial killers/”multiple deleter”, torture, blood, weapons.
Leather & Lark by Brynne Weaver is book #2 in a series of wonderfully gruesome interconnected standalones that are best read in series order.
Lark Montague is not living her best life. With familial issues ongoing, Lark is forced to propose to Lachlan Kane, the one man she despises.
Being a contract killer isn't something Lachlan wants to do anymore, but after butchering a job for a client, he's indebted to his boss for a much longer period of time than anticipated. His way out? Marrying his enemy, Lark, and using his skills to hunt down a killer for her.
With enemies seeking revenge and family possibly at risk, Lark and Lachlan must work together to overcome many dangerous trials, despite their initial dislike for each other.
I loved the grumpy x sunshine enemies-to-lovers trope in this romance book; as grumpy as Lachlan can be, he's a sweetheart and a softie for those he cares about. Sunshine Lark, on the other hand, is positively unhinged, and I love her for it so much.
I was so excited for Leather & Lark after reading Butcher & Blackbird, and I wasn't let down. Though I will say that I didn't feel as invested as I'd hoped, possibly because I was expecting it to be spicier.

Beautiful Carnage (Dark Empire #1/Standalone)
"I am yours from my black heart to my tarnished soul,” he growled powerfully. “Take it, own it, destroy it, I don’t care so long as it’s in your possession.”
Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Hot)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
explicit sexual content, murder, death of parent(s), graphic violence, bullying between love interests, sexual assault (not between love interests), torture, death of child (mentioned), death, fist fight with wolves.
Beautiful Carnage by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti is about a family who had a son stolen from them and the daughter they steal back.
Rocco Romero is supposed to murder Slone Calabresi for her father's sins, but when the time comes, he finds himself unable to go through with it.
Fast forward 5 years, and Slone is about to marry one of her father's most trusted soldiers, Nico. Before making it to the altar, Slone is kidnapped and taken to a remote location with the Romero brothers, where surely torture awaits her. The only torture to be found is the handsome man who once tried to kill her, forced proximity, and one bed.
I hadn't read a dark mafia romance book in a while, so when I saw Beautiful Carnage on the bookshelf a few days before its release date, I thought, 'Why not?'
The Twisted Sisters are among my favorite authors, and the cover of this book is particularly lovely. This is a self-published novel that was recently rereleased.
I was in shock for a few minutes after finding this on the shelf. I dove into this crazy, spicy, fun world almost immediately after buying it. Is it truly enemies-to-lovers if they don't try to off each other at least once?
Mafia puppy
Steal from me? I'll steal from you
Please don't do that. Please

Dark Romance Novels For Experts
Hooked (Never After #1/Standalone)
"Just remember that whenever things feel bleak, all situations are temporary. It’s not your circumstances that determine your worth, it’s how you rise from the ashes after everything burns.”
Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Hot)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
explicit sexual content, graphic torture, violence, murder, burning a dead body, burning building, underage drinking, slight age gap, mentions of rape, death of parents (on and off page/mentioned), suicide (mentioned), Mafia/Gang elements.
Hooked by Emily McIntire is about a man who has (almost) lost everything and his plan for revenge, which includes a rather unsuspecting woman.
Wendy Michaels isn't much of a party girl. Growing up her whole life sheltered by her father and living up to his standards, she never truly got the opportunity to go out.
Wendy is twenty and wants to live life like a normal person after moving to Massachusetts, so when some coworkers invite her out to James Barrie's (also known as Hook) bar, she accepts, despite being underage.
When the daughter of his enemy walks into his bar, James can finally put his plan for revenge into action. Seducing Wendy is no hardship for Hook, but it might be for James when unwanted feelings begin to develop.
Was I here because I heard "revenge plot"? Absolutely, yes, and it was indeed delivered. This book had me hooked from the very first page, and it starts with a murder scene, so something is possibly loose in my head, but we're definitely going to ignore that.
I love the way Hook treated Wendy despite "not feeling anything for her". The way they both need each other is something we all need in life.
Oh, family. (Bad)
Lies, betrayal, and revenge!
Daddy, I love him.

Fabric Of Our Souls (Harlow Sanctum #1)
"I was born with a bad heart—literally and figuratively. But you gave your heart to me, and because of you, I will live. Because of you, I will never take my life for granted ever again.”
Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Hot)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
explicit sexual content, attempted suicide, self-harm (cutting), death, murder, emotional distress, morbid humor, suicide ideation, mentions of torture, burning building, severe mental health issues, accidentally-on-purpose exhibitionism.
Fabric of Our Souls by K.M. Moronova is about a woman who wants nothing more than to die and the men who convince her to live.
Wynn Coldfox wants nothing more than to die. After making an attempt on her life, her brother puts her in an unconventional rehabilitation center where she has to room with Liam Waters, a man who wants to live but cannot stop harming himself.
As Wynn begins her journey to healing, she becomes closer to Liam and Lanston, who share a condition like hers, and their secrets that won't stay buried.
When a ghost from Liam's past comes back to haunt him, the people he cares about get caught in the crossfire, and sometimes not everyone makes it out alive.
Beware: this book will haunt you and make you cry at least once, in a good way, I promise. I don't tend to cry much; suppressing my emotions is something I'm working to unlearn, but this book? It had me crying so much, I'm not even kidding.
This was my first K.M. Moronova book, and I loved it so much that I felt the FMC and her issues like they were mine, which, I suppose, is a problem in and of itself.
They understand me
Only love could hurt like this
Just make it stop... Please

Gothikana (Standalone)
"This will last until the day roses on my grave stop sharing roots with the roses on yours,” he declared. “I will have you even in death, little witch. I am your beast. I am your madness. And you, you’re my afterlife.”
Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Extra Hot)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
explicit sexual content, visions, suicide, death, missing person(s), violence, druging, possession, dreaming of drowning, murder.
Gothikana by RuNyx is about a woman who has lost her way and now seeks to find her purpose in life, and the man who will teach and guide her into flight.
Corvina Clemm is lost. Her mother is gone, and Corvina doesn't know what to do until a mysterious admissions letter arrives in the mail, inviting her to attend the University of Verenmore. At the college, Corvina meets Vad Deverll, who's both a student and a professor, and is entirely off-limits.
As mysteries from the school's deadly past come alive, Corvina and Vad are forced to interact, even if it puts them in danger, and sometimes the most monstrous of all are standing right in front of you.
It's been a hot minute since I finished reading Gothikana, and I'm still not entirely sure what happened. I only know that I really enjoyed this spicy BookTok sensation.
There's a student-teacher relationship featured in this book, and although it's not a trope that I tend to need, I certainly needed this one.
While it's not horror by any means, I got goosebumps while reading this at night, from more than one thing. I don't tend to read Gothic romance books, but I'm glad I decided to pick this one up.

The Ritual (L.O.R.D.S. #1/Standalone)
"I made a vow to protect you, Blake, and I’ll show anyone who tries to hurt you my version of hell.” I’d set the world on fire, including myself, if it meant saving her.”
Spice Rating:🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Extra Hot)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
explicit sexual content, non/dub consent, kidnapping, sexual assault (not between MCs), murder, violence, branding, drug/alcohol use, masks, stalking, tracking.
The Ritual by Shantel Tessier is about a man who sets his sights on a woman to be initiated into a secret society, only to become obsessed with her because of his rival.
Blakely Anderson started as a senior year assignment and a reward for Ryat Archer. That's all she was meant to be, but when her current boyfriend, who is also Ryat's rival, continues to act like an out-of-line, Ryat decides to up his game and claim Blakely for himself.
As Blakely and Ryat's physical and emotional relationship grows, so do their enemies grow bolder with their attacks. When emotions become muddled and the stakes become high, Ryat and Blakely have to see just how far each of them is willing to go for the other, and if in the end it's all worth it.
I obsessed over reading this book as much as Ryat obsesses over Blakely. When I read the first few chapters, I didn't expect to be so thoroughly consumed by this book.
I try not to make a habit of reading past midnight, but The Ritual was so hard to put down, and for such a large book, it didn't feel as long as one would think.
I went into this novel completely blind and absolutely loved every second of the wild ride that it is. If you're looking for a dark romance with a ton of hardcore spice, then this is the book for you.
Sir is possessive
Can this be our Ritual?

Haunting Adeline (Cat and Mouse #1)
"I don't think you know what love is," I whisper. He grunts with amusement. "I don't think anyone does, baby. Love is an enigma, and it's redefined every time someone says it.”
Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Extra Hot)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
explicit sexual content, torture, murder, graphic violence, stalking, trafficking, ritualistic child murder, sexual assault, rape, pedophiles, conspiracy theories, bad parenting, death of parent(s) (mentioned).
Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton is about a woman who claims she doesn't like having a stalker but gets really hot and bothered when her stalker does disturbing stalkerish things.
Adeline Riley is moving into the house her grandmother left for her when she acquires a stalker. Zade Meadows isn't one for being weird around women, seeing as that's his line of business, but when he spies Adeline at her book signing, he becomes obsessed. As Zade continues to stalk Adeline, he becomes more reckless, and attention in his line of work is never a good thing.
Adeline must come to terms with the fact that her stalker can be both her damnation and her savior. But as she uncovers mysteries in her gothic mansion, she learns that history can, and possibly always will, repeat itself.
Haunting Adeline is Haunting All My Lines – do you see what I did there? I'm way too proud.
This spicy dark romance book is super popular online, especially on BookTok and Bookstagram. I've heard a lot about it online - both good and bad - and it seems that many people either love this book or hate it, much like those enemies-to-lovers novels I enjoy reading, so it's no surprise I enjoyed this book.
Haunting Adeline explores conspiracy theories (as I'm led to believe) and delves into a range of relatively dark topics. Please make sure your mental health is in very good condition before cracking this book open. I say all of that as someone who should've been better prepared but wasn't.
I like haunted homes!
