Enemies to lovers is a beloved trope that has stood the test of time (Pride and Prejudice, anyone?) and I greatly enjoy exploring how authors integrate it across different genres. Whether at a Princess’ estate in Regency England or a Mafia Don’s penthouse in contemporary New York, the tension, banter, and emotional payoff are the things dreams are made of (and don’t even get me started on the SPICE! It’s truly electric when enemies finally become lovers).

This list has something for every kind of romance reader: historical, mafia, dark, contemporary, rom-com, and more. I’ve gone through my favorite enemies-to-lovers romance novels of the last few years and selected the best to showcase the wide breadth of romance subgenres this iconic trope can cover. Below, you’ll find an introduction to each book’s enemies, the reason behind their animosity, and why I love each and every one.

Enemies-to-Lovers Romance Books To Add To Your To Be Read List

Next Level Love By Shameez Patel

Standalone

Published: January 2026

Spice Level: Extra Mild (🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Grief, Emotional Abuse, Death Of A Parent, Car Accident, Sexism, Sexual Content (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

Our enemies: Elizabeth, a civil engineer intern looking for a new start away from family drama, and Lincoln, her boss who hates small talk and personal conversations (at least in real life).

Why they’re enemies: Lincoln treats Elizabeth like a chore and seems to only focus on the negative parts of her performance. Elizabeth, on the other hand, just wants to leave her internship with professional experience and a positive recommendation.

Lincoln is enthralled by his intern but knows he can’t do anything about it because of power dynamics, and Elizabeth grows more annoyed with her closed-off boss by the day. Both of them vent about their office enemies to their online best friend. They just don’t realize they’re actually venting to each other. And when that revelation comes out, you’re in for a treat.

I enjoyed this book so much that I stopped halfway through to encourage everyone I knew to pick up a copy immediately. The audiobook was immersive and made me feel so many different emotions throughout. I was literally kicking my feet and squealing when Lincoln and Elizabeth found out they had been online best friends all along (and it took them long enough because these two couldn’t be more different in real life than they were online).

This is Shameez Patel’s sophomore book, and I can’t wait to read what she comes out with next, especially if it’s another STEM workplace romance!

10 Things That Never Happened by Alexis Hall

Book #1 in the Material World series

Published: October 2023

Spice Level: Extra Mild (🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Injury, Toxic Relationship, Death Of A Parent, Sexual Content (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

Our enemies: Sam, a manager at a bed-and-bath store who cares deeply for his employees but otherwise hates his job, and Jonathan, Sam’s corporate boss who acts like he doesn’t have any emotions.

Why they’re enemies: Jonathan thinks he made a mistake hiring Sam (his store is kind of a mess, and his employees aren’t the brightest of the bunch), so he decides to fire him. But as he does, Sam trips, falls, hits his head on company property, and kind of implies he has amnesia.

Jonathan doesn’t want to get sued, so naturally he invites Sam to stay with him while he recovers. Now Sam has to continue faking amnesia while living with his sworn enemy, while Jonathan tries to figure out how to handle his professional and personal lives colliding after years of keeping them far apart.

This is a unique enemies-to-lovers situation because they both still hate each other, but Sam has to pretend he doesn’t even know who Jonathan is (much less that he recently fired him), and Jonathan can’t openly hate an employee who was injured on company property. The mental gymnastics of that? I’m tired just explaining it! Add in the…unique individuals who work for Sam, and this story is one wild ride.

I couldn’t get enough of this story and spent half the time hiding behind a pillow while reading it because I was so nervous that Sam would accidentally reveal to Johnathan that he actually remembers everything.

This zany book fits perfectly with Alexis Hall’s other works (Boyfriend Material, Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake, etc.), and I highly recommend it for a more upbeat, rom-com take on a fan-favorite trope.

Scandal of the Summer By Alexandra Vasti

Book #1 in the Flirty Rotten Scoundrels series

Published: June 2026

Spice Level: Medium (🌶️🌶️🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Sexual Content, Kidnapping, Death Of A Parent, Violence, Classism (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

Our enemies: Lady Ruby, an educated lady who always seems to talk herself into unfortunate social situations, and Captain Malcolm, a con man selling counterfeit goods.

Why they’re enemies: Malcolm uses a Princess’s unoccupied estate to house his crew and store his counterfeit goods when Ruby and her friends arrive, pretending to be the Princess's ladies-in-waiting. Unbeknownst to Ruby, she’s actually the reason Malcolm’s latest scheme was uncovered and why he’s been running for his life.

Cue conflict as Malcolm tries to drive away Ruby and her friends before they discover the counterfeit gloves…and rugs…and booze. What starts off as funny pranks, like serving the worst food and releasing bugs into one of the bedrooms, quickly turns to unwanted feelings as the two become close. Oh, and then the Princess arrives and is subsequently kidnapped along with one of Ruby’s best friends, and now our enemies must traverse the country to try and locate them. Talk about drama!

I was on the edge of my seat throughout this entire book and kept audibly laughing at the situations these characters found themselves in. The banter between Malcolm and Ruby was also exquisite, and it reeled me right back to Regency England.

If you’re a fan of Martha Waters’ Regency Vows series, you’ll definitely love this book! Filled with laugh-out-loud hijinks, swoony moments, and a feminist rebellion against the narrow role women are expected to play, this historical romance truly has it all.

I’m beyond excited for this series to continue because the side characters were just as amazing as the main ones. I’ll be re-reading Malcolm and Ruby’s adventure in the meantime!

His Empress by Emilia Rossi

Book #3 in the Empire of Royals series

(can be read as a standalone, though it does refer to events from the first 2 books)

Published: April 2026 [eBook], November 2026 [print]

Spice Level: Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Sexual Content, Pregnancy, Violence, Gore, Trafficking, Grief, Injury Detail, Harm to a Pet (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

Our enemies: Sienna, the world’s top hacker and sister to the New York Mafia’s don, and Dimitri, Chicago Bratva’s Pakhan and brother-in-law to the don.

Why they’re enemies: Sienna and Dimitri spend a passionate weekend in Paris, unaware of who the other person is, and Sienna ends up pregnant. When they unintentionally meet again, Dimitri is convinced Sienna planned the whole scheme, and Sienna thinks he will take her child away from her. Solution: a marriage of convenience, naturally.

Now Sienna is pregnant and trapped in Chicago, surrounded by a staff that supposedly doesn’t understand any English (which isn’t true) and married to a man who can’t stand her. Dimitri does everything he can to ignore the spark between him and Sienna while tracking down a dark figure from his past he thought had died long ago.

Little does he know that Sienna is considered the world’s top hacker and is also after the same man, just mostly virtually. With both of their lives at risk and a baby on the way, will they overcome their individual trauma and collective hatred before it’s too late?

I truly can’t recommend this grumpy x sunshine enemies-to-lovers novel enough. If you aren’t a dark romance or mafia reader, but are intrigued, I highly recommend starting with this one as an introduction to the sub-genres.

Emilia Rossi writes dark romance novels where the violence and weapon use happen with outsiders, never between the main characters. The MMCs may hate the world and don’t have a problem with murder, but they’re down bad for their women, even if they refuse to admit it to themselves.

Emilia will never let you down, not in her mafia world nor in any of her omegaverses (which she writes under the name Emilia Emerson). You won’t want to miss out on experiencing this story for yourself.

Precious Hazard by Neva Altaj

Book #11 in the Perfectly Imperfect series

(can be read as a standalone, though it does refer to characters from the other books)

Published: July 2025

Spice Level: Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Sexual Content, Violence, Gun Violence, Child Death (before the book starts) - (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

Our enemies: Tara, the head of the Serbian crime organization’s sister, and Arturo, the underboss in the Italian mafia whose sister is married to Tara’s brother.

Why they’re enemies: Arturo always pictured himself marrying an obedient, traditional mafia bride until the Don stepped in and arranged his marriage to Tara, a spunky, outspoken jill-of-many-trades who had no plans to settle down.

Arturo decides to blackmail her into marrying him without a fuss, and Tara decides she’s going to do everything she can to make having her around more annoying than it’s worth.

Arturo and Tara had me screaming at my Kindle from the beginning because who starts a marriage off by threatening to frame your fiancé for murder? Truly a wild move from Arturo.

A bit of context if you decide to dive into the dark romance series starting with this book: these two met when their siblings were getting married, and Tara poured an entire bowl of punch onto Arturo in the middle of an argument. Iconic behavior, if you ask me. Now that they’ve been forced together, I knew it would be fireworks from the beginning, and I wasn’t wrong. These two truly hate each other and hate how much they want to kiss the other even more.

Neva Altaj does an amazing job of giving each couple a story unique to them, and while other characters pop up throughout, reading the books in this series out of order is no problem at all. In fact, I originally started with book five and fell in love.

Definitely pick up Precious Hazard if you’re looking for an enemies-to-lovers arranged marriage filled with exquisite banter and mutual trauma-healing.

The Devious Husband by Catharina Maura

Book #6 in The Windsors series

(can be read as a standalone, though it does refer to characters/events from the other books)

Published: August 2024

Spice Level: Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Kidnapping, Death, Sexual Content, Violence, Terminal Illness (not the MCs) (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

Our enemies: Sierra Windsor, the last of her siblings to enter an arranged marriage decided by their grandmother and CEO of Windsor Real Estate, and Xavier Kingston, real estate magnate and Sierra’s business rival.

Why they’re enemies: From the moment Sierra started working in real estate, Xavier fought for the same properties, submitted similar designs, and pulled pranks to get the upper hand.

Sierra and Xavier have traded pranks and winning sales pitches for years. Sierra has broken into his office, Xavier has secretly attended her brothers’ poker nights, and they’ve both been pining from afar.

Xavier knows that Sierra will soon be engaged to someone of her grandmother’s choosing, but he wants her for himself, so he offers Grandma Windsor a massive deal: he’ll merge his company into Windsor Real Estate if Sienna marries him. Of course she accepts, though she reminds Xavier that they must abide by her marriage rules: they have to stay married for three years, they can’t spend more than three consecutive days apart, they have to give the marriage an honest try, and they have to share a bed.

Now that the pranks and shenanigans can happen inside the house, what could possibly go wrong?

I adore Catharina Maura and her writing. Each book in this billionaire romance series is incredibly fun, and the payoff of watching Sierra and Xavier at each other’s throats for five books before it was their turn was immaculate.

That’s not to say you can’t jump straight into this book (you’ll still have a wonderful time with the arranged marriage, forced proximity, and only one bed), but if you want to add a bit of a slow burn to your enemies-to-lovers, there’s an entire series worth waiting for you!

Beyond the slow burn romance, you can also expect second chances, hidden identities, friends-to-lovers, marriages of convenience, and a tight-knit family that would do just about anything for each other. You’re sure to love it!

Tastes Like Shakkar By Nisha Sharma

Book #2 in the If Shakespeare Was an Auntie series

(can be read as a standalone)

Published: August 2023

Spice Level: Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Sexual Content, Racism, Fatphobia, Death Of A Parent (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

Our enemies: Bobbi, a wedding planner extraordinaire who’s trying to prove she should take over the family business, and Benjamin “Bunty”, an egotistical world-class chef who’s running away from his family’s frozen food empire legacy.

Why they’re enemies: Bobbi had a dream client, a wedding so big that it would have set her up professionally for life; she only needed to convince Bunty to break his “no wedding catering” rule. But he doesn’t, so the couple walks, and now Bobbi is stuck trying to prove to her family that she’s ready to take on more responsibility and eventually run the business.

This all takes place before the meat of the plot, which happens a bit after the wedding that got away. Now Bobbi and Bunty have to actually work together because their best friends are getting married to each other.

Now we have enemies in forced proximity, working on a wedding; what else could go wrong? Well, just about everything, because this wedding might be cursed by a shaadi saboteur, and Bobbi and Bunty need to figure out why everything is going wrong before it impacts the happy couple. Even I’m stressed!

Like every other book I’ve read by Nisha Sharma, this one is laugh-out-loud funny and full of heart. The banter between Bobbi and Bunty is top-notch, the quest to discover the shaadi saboteur had me in tears of laughter, and the food descriptions were so enticing I had to stop and order takeout multiple times.

I also loved that this rom-com is a retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, and that the rest of the trilogy includes reimaginings of The Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night, all with a South Asian twist.

Block Shot by Kennedy Ryan

Book #2 in the Hoops series

(can be read as a standalone)

Published: September 2018

Spice Level: Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Infidelity, Fatphobia, Body shaming, Chronic illness, Death of a parent (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

Our enemies: Jared, a successful (if a bit arrogant) sports agent with a closed heart, and Banner, a tough-as-nails sports agent who made her way into a male-dominated field and has the confidence (and thick skin) to prove it.

Why they’re enemies: Jared and Banner went to college together, were best friends even, until one night when they finally hooked up, and a misunderstanding (and public humiliation) led Banner to think that Jared did it all to get into a fraternity.

After this rather unfortunate-to-the-tenth-degree incident, Banner cuts Jared off, and they go their separate ways. Since they’re both successful sports agents, it’s only a matter of time before they’re spinning in the same orbit again, and despite Jared’s “no emotion” view of work, he still can’t help wanting her.

Banner, on the other hand, doesn’t give Jared even an inch, and I have to admit, it’s incredibly gratifying to watch. I mean, Jared’s reaction to Banner being in a loving and committed relationship? There’s nothing better than a love triangle to bring a stubborn, possessive man to his knees.

Jared and Banner are enemies professionally and personally, and the slow-burn-to-lovers is chef’s kiss perfection, which is unsurprising, considering Kennedy Ryan has never let me down and her books never miss.

If you haven’t read a book by Kennedy Ryan before, what are you doing? And if you’ve devoured her most recent books, don’t sleep on her backlist! This sports romance series is full of big emotions, hard topics, and love that’s hard-fought for and won. Block Shot, in particular, had me feeling like I went to war with the MCs to fight for their love, and I easily could've read another whole book about their happily ever after.

Game On by Navessa Allen

Book #3 in the Into Darkness series

(can be read as a standalone)

Published: March 2026

Spice Level: Extra Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Sexual Content, Chronic Illness, Car Accident, Medical Content, Body Shaming, Kidnapping (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

Our enemies: Tyler, a seemingly normal guy who actually runs a very large illicit gambling ring, and Stella, a tattoo artist with a traumatic past.

Why they’re enemies: Stella has no choice but to become enemies with Tyler, who seduced her at her own tattoo parlor, then blackmailed her brother for millions of dollars unless she agrees to fake date him so he can access her parents’ rich friends (and get Stella under his thumb).

Stella represents everything Tyler hates: privileged, entitled, and free of any consequences for her actions (or so he thinks), and he relishes controlling her. Not only does he want to destroy her parents’ company and the lives of their friends, but he also wants to take away everything Stella holds dear.

Stella, on the other hand, just wants to keep her brother safe and stay away from her former best friend who left her to deal with the consequences of her drunk driving mistake.

Y'all, things are messy in this dark romance. The hate between Stella and Tyler is visceral and, at least on Tyler’s side, years in the making. At times, I truly wondered how Navessa Allen would get them to the point of being a happy couple, though I shouldn’t have doubted her prowess.

I was hooked from the beginning, waiting to see how Stella would navigate this sticky situation and how Tyler would react when he discovered the truth. Be prepared to devour this in one sitting because I surely did.

I don’t know about you, but right now I’m wondering why I don’t have a lifelong rival with simmering tension that neither of us acknowledges, but both of us know is there.

We covered a lot in this article: arranged marriages, Regency England, fake amnesia (I’ll never be over that), surprise pregnancies, awkward workplace environments, blackmail, and don’t forget the mafia. One of my favorite things about tropes is that they can help you discover new romance subgenres to love because you know at least a bit of what to expect.

I hope you go forth and read about all the enemies becoming lovers in all the romance subgenres, and that you report back to me on The Nest (and feel free to tag me - Courtney | bookmarkedtbr) because I need more enemies-to-lovers couples to live vicariously through. Happy reading!
