Icebreaker by Hannah Grace is a spicy hockey contemporary romance that was released in 2022 and quickly gained popularity due to BookTok's love of romance books and particularly sports romances.
The books recommended below are all hockey romances—just like Icebreaker—and don't worry, they have plenty of spicy scenes. You'll find a range of different tropes in each story, but they all have one thing in common: found family.
There are many smutty hockey romance books to choose from out in the world (especially on Kindle Unlimited*), but since these were all five-star reads for me, I'm here to recommend them to you (in no particular order).

Behind the Net by Stephanie Archer*
OwlCrate Spice Scale - Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Panic attack, discussion of the death of a parent due to a drunk driving incident, discussion of anxiety and history of depression, and parent’s alcoholism.
Being the live-in assistant for NHL hockey player Jamie Streicher was supposed to be easy for Pippa, until it wasn't. All of a sudden, the two are hanging out all of the time and charming one another. Her high school crush never really left, but now it's back with a vengeance, and so how can they not fall for each other?
Stephanie Archer's writing style makes her books easy to read, and I couldn't put Behind the Net down. I'm almost certain I pulled an all-nighter reading this book (to be honest, I don't remember because of exhaustion, but I can tell you for sure that the book is fantastic).
Archer tends to write the strongest men, but she makes them the absolute softest with their girls. There are three more books currently available in the Vancouver Storm series, with more to come. Keep an eye out for book 5, which is publishing in early 2026!
Mile High by Liz Tomforde*
OwlCrate Spice Sale - Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Fatphobia, body-shaming, parental abandonment, mentions of anxiety/panic attacks, suicidal ideation, emesis, alcohol consumption, and drug use.
Mile High is also an NHL romance, but this time between a player and one of the team's flight attendants.
Evan Zanders has everything he could ever want, but when he meets Stevie Shay, who wants nothing to do with him, everything changes. Suddenly, all he can think about is Stevie, and he doesn't know why.
This book is amazing, and I'm grateful that Liz Tomforde decided to include Zander's perspective in it as well. We get pages upon pages and chapters upon chapters of him being a simp for Stevie, which I loved to see.
This book has a classic case of 'he falls first,' which is one of my favorite tropes. There are four additional books in the Windy City series, each covering a different sport, but if you want more hockey romance, be sure to check out book 5, Rewind It Back.
The Deal by Elle Kennedy*
OwlCrate Spice Scale - Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Alcohol, emotional abuse, rape, sexual abuse, self-harm, death of a parent (off-page), misogyny, domestic violence, and physical abuse.
Initially self-published, The Deal is Elle Kennedy's hockey romance debut and the first book in the Off-Campus series. At present, Elle has three hockey romance series, all of which are interconnected.
This book is a tutor/student romance that follows Hannah and Garrett. Though not enemies, an unexpected kiss kindles an attraction between the two. To manage their feelings and make Hannah’s crush jealous, the pair strikes a deal: tutoring in exchange for fake dating.
But as their attraction grows and the fake dating scheme starts to spiral out of control, they need to figure out where their priorities lie.
This book was so much fun, and I love reading about Hannah and Garrett whenever I need a cute pick-me-up. The five-book series is easy to binge, and the books have recently been revised, so they now feature new covers and bonus chapters. Additionally, Kennedy has written a spin-off with four books and another spin-off with three books, so there’s plenty to get through.
Face Off by Chelsea Curto*
OwlCrate Spice Scale - Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Sexism, sexual harassment, abandonment, violence, vomit, and emotional abuse.
Face Off is one of my favorite hockey romances (and series) of all time, and it's one of the most unique ones I've ever seen.
This rivals-to-lovers story follows Emmy and Maverick, both of whom are hockey players on the same team. He's a golden retriever and hockey's golden boy, and she's the first female NHL player to play for her Division 1 NHL team.
If you enjoy hockey romance books, I beg you to read this one if you haven’t already. You'll be sure to fall in love with golden boy Mavvy and Emmy, as well as the rest of the team that becomes their found family throughout the book.
When I received the ARC of book three (sorry to brag), I binged it in less than 15 hours. If that doesn't prove my love for this series, I don't know what will. There are currently three more books in the D.C. Stars series, on top of Face Off, with more to come in the future.
Unsteady by Peyton Corrine*
OwlCrate Spice Scale - Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, alcoholism, panic attacks/disorders, grief, abandonment, parental neglect, PTSD, injury.
Rhys Koteskiy and Sadie Brown have both been facing struggles for a long time. Their paths cross for the first time when Rhys is having a panic attack on the ice, and Sadie helps him. From that moment onwards, they become each other's safe space, growing closer until their romance blossoms and becomes the best part of their lives.
This book is probably the closest to Icebreaker in terms of tropes (college romance, hockey player x ice skater), but it also explores much deeper themes, with a significant focus on mental health. Be sure to check content warnings if you're interested in reading this book.
Either way, the found family in this book is amazing, especially when it comes to the hockey team. What's more, it's beautiful to see Rhys' family become Sadie's family, and vice versa.
Book two, Unloved, was published in February 2025, and book 3 is coming in 2026.
Collide by Bal Khabra*
OwlCrate Spice Scale - Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Toxic relationship, grief, car accident, death of a parent, abandonment, alcohol.
When Summer's senior thesis advisor assigns her to work with hockey player Aiden, she's torn. She's struggling between trying to earn her degree in sports psychology and trying her best to stay away from hockey, her least favorite sport.
At first, she and Aiden can't stand each other, but their constant bickering slowly turns into playful bantering, and soon a romantic attraction grows between the two.
Fun fact: Authors Bal Khabra (Collide) and Peyton Corrine (Unsteady) are best friends and have been writing their novels together online for some time now.
This hockey romance is super cute; it has some underlying themes of mental health, but nowhere near as much as Unsteady. The second book in the Off the Ice series was published earlier this year, with book 3 releasing in October.
The Au Pair Affair by Tessa Bailey
OwlCrate Spice Scale - Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Physical abuse, violence, sexual harassment, injury, mental illness, bullying, kidnapping, stalking, and alcohol.
This is technically the second book in the Big Shots series (the first one is about golf), but the series is made up of five interconnected standalones, so you can read the books in any order you like. Books 1-3 are now available, with book 4 publishing later this year and book 5 following in early 2026.
The Au Pair Affair follows single dad Burgess and his newly hired au pair Tallulah, who has just come back from working on her marine biology degree in Antarctica and doesn't know where to go from here.
When Burgess offers her a job, she jumps at the opportunity. The two quickly grow closer, and a romance forms, one that neither of them was ready for.
I loved reading this book, mainly because it has a lot of talk about penguins and Antarctica, which is interesting since I've never seen a romance book focus on these types of topics before.
I also really liked how this book portrayed what it's like to enter a profession you're not familiar with to afford to pay for school. It's something many of us have dealt with, but it's rarely portrayed in books.
Like I said, this is book two in the series. It's expected to be five books, and book three was recently released.
Special Mentions For Other Romance Books By Hannah Grace
If you loved Icebreaker, especially Henry Turner (if you know, you know 😉), you'll be glad to know that there are more books in the Maple Hills series, and these deserve a special mention!
Wildfire by Hannah Grace
OwlCrate Spice Scale - Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Addiction issues (parent), parental neglect and verbal abuse, mental health (low self-esteem), sexual content (consensual), alcohol use, explicit language, abandonment.
Wildfire takes place the summer after Icebreaker, and it's a workplace romance story that follows two camp counselors.
Russ Callaghan and Aurora Roberts both attend Maple Hills University but don't cross paths until a party at the end of the school year, where they have a one-night stand.
Imagine their surprise when they run into each other at the summer camp where they both work. Their fiery connection is still there, but the camp has a strict "no fraternizing" rule that they must follow to keep their jobs.
This book is different from book one, mainly because it isn't centered around hockey, but just like Icebreaker, it has plenty of spice and that romantic flair that Hannah Grace knows how to write best.
P.S. If you love adorable golden retrievers, you need to get a copy of this book.
Daydream by Hannah Grace
OwlCrate Spice Scale - Hot (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):
Family pressure, anxiety, social/academic pressures, and internalized pressures related to neurodivergence (undiagnosed), sexual content (consensual), alcohol use, drug use, drink spiking, discussions about being pressured sexually, mention of Black women being disproportionately impacted by medical negligence, discussions about birth control, physical altercation, explicit language.
Daydream takes place in the next hockey season and follows fan-favorite Henry Turner and his tutor, Halle Jacobs. The two meet when Henry accidentally crashes Halle's book club, and they become friends. After learning about his struggles, Halle offers to tutor Henry. In turn, when Henry learns about Halle's struggles with writing her book, he also offers to help where he can. The only problem is that they have to stick to their rules and not fall in love.
This friends-to-lovers romance is my personal favorite in the series (although they're all five-star reads for me). Henry was always one of my favorite characters, but being able to read from his perspective and see his happily ever after occur just made it even better.
I loved the storyline, the relationship, the cover design, and, honestly, pretty much everything about it.
Whether you're looking for spicy encounters or found families, I hope these recs will help you get back on the ice and keep you turning pages long into the night.
