By Alice Grace

Reading the rainbow is one of the best goals to have every month, and what better way to learn more about the LGBTQIA+ community than through our favorite medium: books? Here are some fantastic books with LGBTQIA+ representation, which are perfect for reading during Pride Month and any other month of the year!

*While books in each section do represent the identity or sexuality of the category they’re in, the colors of each cover do not do the same. Please note that these have different meanings in relation to the pride flag itself!

L IS FOR LESBIAN

Lesbians are women who love or are attracted to women. You might also hear these books or stories referred to as “ sapphic” books, recommendations, and the like.

Sapphic is a term that comes from the Greek poet Sappho from the island of Lesbos, who became known for writing about her desire for other women.

Red is for life, the perfect color to explore the passion and depth in the highs and lows of every day.

In our first recommendation, we not only get the sweetest sapphic love story, but we also get a fantastic representation of an amazing culture from an Own-Voice author!

Lavash at First Sight by Taleen Voskuni

Spice Level: 1 (Extra Mild)

Nazeli Gregorian loves her marketing job but not her tech-bro coworkers, who can’t seem to let her complete a project on her own. Eager for a distraction, she gladly attends PakCon (a food-packaging convention) on her parents’ behalf.

There, she meets Vanya Simonian, a meet-cute cut short by the fact Vanya is the daughter of the Gregorians’ biggest rivals. Under their parents’ suspicious eyes and the pressure of PakCon’s contest for an important ad slot, will their love story blaze beautifully or burn out?

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Homophobia, Lesbophobia, Biphobia, Emotional Abuse, Religious Bigotry, Genocide, Body Shaming

Looking for something with a vintage flair? Celebrate classic stories with a twist and read this recommendation that tells the story of Snow White’s evil queen

The Crimson Crown by Heather Walter

Spice Level: 1 (Extra Mild)

Ayleth never imagined her path would lead her to be the villain in someone else's story, but before she was the evil queen, she was a witch practicing magic in secret with her coven.

Hoping her magic will reveal itself soon and facing the ongoing threat of the Royal Huntsmen, she's determined to prove to everyone she's the witch they need.

When Ayleth's quest confronts her with the girl she gave her heart to, only to have it broken, she and Jacquetta must set aside their pasts to survive the dark secrets of the White Court. The only way forward is to become the wickedest of them all.

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Death, Abandonment, Grief, Blood, Animal Death, Body Horror, Gore

G IS FOR GAY

While slang has given "gay" a slightly different meaning—a person who loves or is attracted to a person of the same sex—it's still typically used for men who love or are attracted to men. These books embody the next color in the rainbow: orange!

Orange stands for healing. These characters not only find themselves but also communities and people who help them heal in different ways

Our first recommendation proves that sometimes life, and love, doesn’t always turn out the way we expect it, but that even the tartest lemons make some of the sweetest lemonade!

The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun

Spice Level: 2 (Mild)

Dev is a firm believer in fairy tales, which might just be why he’s the best producer in Ever After history. That is, until Charlie is cast as the reality dating show’s star.

Charlie doesn't care much for love, but this show is his last chance to restore his image. Of course, he’s an anxious mess on-screen and doesn’t have much chemistry with the women he’s supposed to be dating, so the image part may not be working out exactly as he planned.

However, as Dev fights to get Charlie to connect with someone, sparks begin to fly, but going off-script comes with repercussions they might not be prepared for.

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Mental Illness, Panic Attacks/Disorder, Homophobia, Sexual Content, Biphobia, Alcohol, Bullying, Alcoholism

This story explores the most important ways we can love someone, and although it's the second in a series, it still holds a special place in the hearts of many readers.

Heartstopper Volume 2 by Alice Oseman

Spice Level: 1 (Extra Mild)

Charlie is absolutely sure there is no way Nick could ever be more than his best friend since Nick is straight.

However, Nick is learning new things about himself, his family, and his friends, which might mean there's a little more to the way he feels about Charlie than anyone expected.

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Homophobia, Bullying, Violence, Eating Disorder, Outing

B IS FOR BISEXUALITY

Yellow reminds us of so many wonderful things, like sunlight, and these books are just the start! Bisexual describes people who love or are attracted to more than one sex or gender.

This first recommendation combines hijinks, fake dating, and romance in all the best ways.

Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert

Spice Level: 3 (Medium)

Danika Brown knows she doesn't need or want romance. Instead, she'd rather fill her time working to achieve academic renown and her own professional success, no attachments necessary. If this means she's only looking for a friend with benefits, who's going to hurt, as long as they both know the score?

This, of course, changes when Zafir Ansari saves Dani during a workplace fire, and they go viral on the internet. Now they're fake dating to help promote his sports charity: one set on seduction and the other as a hopeless romantic determined to break down cynical pragmatism.

As things get more and more serious between the two, Dani needs to decide if this is a test of her willpower or if the universe is giving her a huge hint.

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Panic Attacks/Disorder, Mental Illness, Parent Death, Death, Grief, Infidelity, Car Accident, Toxic Relationship

Now for a book from one of the most talked about authors of her generation

Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

Spice Level: 2 (Mild)

Frances is the cool, level-headed, and observant friend, while Bobbi is bubbly, self-possessed, and beautiful. That's how their friendship works, or did until they meet a well-known photographer at a local poetry event.

The photographer slowly draws both girls into her sophisticated world, where they meet her handsome husband, Nick. Nick harmlessly flirts with Frances, but really, how harmless is a flirtation when it inevitably leads to intimacy?

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Self-Harm, Infidelity, Alcoholism, Mental Illness, Chronic Illness, Infertility, Miscarriage, Suicidal Thoughts

T IS FOR TRANSGENDER

Transgender people are those whose gender expression and/or identity are different from the one they were assigned at first.

These recommendations explore the green buds of their characters' personal growth!

Our first recommendation is a gorgeous celebration of Mexican and transgender identities.

The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas

This book is everything we wanted from Percy Jackson and more! Every ten years, the Sun's power requires a sacrifice. In return, Sol travels the sky and keeps the Obsidian gods at bay. To find this sacrifice, he chooses ten of the most worthy semidioses to compete in the Sunbearer Trials.

Teo is the trans-Jade son of the goddess of birds. His worries about the Trials are mainly for his best friend, Niya, whose chances of surviving are one in ten.

However, this year, Sol has more planned than anyone could have guessed. For the first time in over a century, two Jade semidioses are selected to compete.

Now, Teo is struggling to save himself and Xio while trying to avoid his annoyingly handsome ex-best friend, Aurelio, the hero favored to win.

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Violence, Bullying, Blood, Dysphoria, Child Abuse, Fire/Fire Injuries, Child Death, Death, Kidnapping

This next book reveals the true magic of just one day, even when it doesn't exactly go as planned.

This Day Changes Everything by Edward Underhill

Abby absolutely believes in the universe. How could she not when her Midwest high school's marching band is set to perform in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade? This means it's the perfect time to finally tell her best friend, Kat, that she might want to be more than friends with the perfect gift.

Leo, however, does not believe in the universe. This trip is how his very Southern extended family is going to find out he's trans, after all. The universe is prepared for Leo's cynicism, though, and it throws Leo and Abby onto the same train, going in the wrong direction.

While lost in Manhattan, Abby loses her romantic gift for Kat, and both she and Leo have to scramble to save a day that could change everything.

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Transphobia, Deadnaming, Homophobia, Outing, Biphobia, Lesbophobia, Vomit, Dysphoria

Q IS FOR QUEER OR QUESTIONING

Identities come in so many shades, and all of them are as beautiful as the shades of blue!

Queer or questioning are what people use when they choose not to label themselves, don't feel a label genuinely reflects their identity, or are exploring their gender expression, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Blue symbolizes serenity or harmony, both of which our characters eventually find in this beautiful recommendation.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

Spice Level: 1 (Extra Mild)

Aristotle and Dante couldn't be more different if they tried. Aristotle is angry; with his brother in prison, he's getting no answers—or even conversations. Dante has an unusual way of looking at the world paired with a few know-it-all tendencies.

A chance meeting at the swimming pool may have been exactly what two boys with nothing in common needed. Since friendship doesn't need similarities, they learn and discover the importance of the kind of friendship that changes you in ways you wouldn't believe and lasts a lifetime.

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Homophobia, Hate Crime, Car Accident, Violence, Transphobia, Murder, Death, Drug Use

Some experiences unexpectedly make life a more challenging road to navigate. Our next recommendation explores these experiences and why we need to push through and continue living after them.

The Ghosts We Keep by Mason Deaver

Liam Cooper is just trying to keep it together after his brother Ethan is killed in a hit-and-run. Without one of the most important people in his life, he's trying to learn how to face the world again while struggling to accept the way his relationships with his best friends are phasing out.

As Liam finds themself, they also find Marcus, who seems to know just what they're going through. When grief seems to be the only road, Liam realizes there might be more to life than just surviving.

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Self-Harm, Death, Grief, Suicidal Thoughts, Car Accident, Toxic Friendship, Transphobia, Vomit

I IS FOR INTERSEX

Intersex people are those born with a combination of male and female biological traits.

Although not featured on the pride flag, rich indigo is a symbol of inner knowing.

When it comes to understanding yourself in only the way you can, this book embodies the color beautifully.

That Inevitable Victorian Thing by E.K. Johnston

Spice Level: 1 (Extra Mild)

Note: this is an alternative history meant to illustrate a society where British Imperialism had different impacts on the world, and the British Empire was preserved.

Genetically arranged matchmaking means that Victoria-Margaret, Crown Princess of the British Empire, will eventually be led into a politically advantageous marriage. Before that, she gets one summer of complete freedom, a summer in which she meets Helena Marcus and August Callaghan.

As they navigate high-society events, the three friends discover they share a special bond and that they may have the chance to have their cake and eat it, too.

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Colonization, Infertility, Ableism, Homophobia, Panic Attack, Slavery, Parent Death, Racism

If you loved The Honeys by Ryan la Sala, dive into a similar world with my next recommendation!

Flawless Girls by Anna-Marie McLemore

The Soler sisters' grandmother knows the impossible standards both will have to meet when it comes to participating in polite society. Already infamous in several circles, they've been granted spots at a finishing school that turns out the classiest first ladies, princesses, and socialites.

Within the first day, Isla is already home. She refuses to become one of the Alarie girls while her older sister, Renata, stays. Months later, Renata returns an entirely different girl and vanishes the same day.

While her grandmother uses every connection she has to find Renata, Isla's plan is to go to the source. She re-enrolls at Alarie House with one goal: to find out what happened to her sister.

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Misogyny, Classism, Injury, Bullying, Blood, Lesbophobia, Fatphobia, Racism, Sexism

A IS FOR ASEXUAL

Asexuality is experiencing little to no sexual attraction. Oftentimes, asexuality is identified on a spectrum based on factors like your emotional, romantic, and/or spiritual attraction to other people of one or multiple genders.

These connections are a great representation of violet, which stands for spirit on the pride flag!

Loveless by Alice Oseman

Spice Level: 1 (Extra Mild)

Georgia is going to find love. As she starts university, her only goal is to figure out what everyone means when they talk about their crushes and why romance seems so easy for them. However, her plan starts to fray when her actions wreak havoc among her friends.

On the right path, going the wrong direction, new terms leave her more confused. Maybe she was meant to be alone, or perhaps she just needs to look for something uniquely her own?

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Acephobia/Arophobia, Toxic Relationship, Homophobia, Emotional Abuse, Vomit

Experience a gorgeous new perspective from Own-Voice author Sydney Langford with this next recommendation.

The Loudest Silence by Sydney Langford

Casey Kowalski was going to be a singer, but sudden, permanent, and profound hearing loss and her family's move from Portland to Miami changed everything.

Struggling to start over at a new high school while learning how to be a Deaf-Hard of Hearing person in the world, Casey's only plan is to mourn the loss of music while hiding her hearing loss from her classmates.

Hayden Gonzalez-Rossi is also struggling under the pressure of his famous soccer-playing family. He knows what everyone expects him to do, but he'd much rather perform on Broadway if he can find a way to keep his anxiety from sending him spiraling the second he plans on telling everyone the truth.

Both set on hiding themselves from the world around them, Hayden and Casey bond and discover that secrets have a way of coming out, but that doesn't mean things can't turn out okay.

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

⁣Ableism, Panic Attack/Disorder, Bullying, Grief, Acephobia/Arophobia, Xenophobia, Toxic Relationship, Fatphobia, Toxic Friendship
