In 1984, Canadian author Charles De Lint published Moonheart, a story about two antique shop owners who enter the Otherworld and must work with a wizard to save both worlds. To this day, this book is considered the first published work to truly emulate the elements of an urban fantasy novel.
While the subgenre “urban fantasy” wasn’t coined until thirteen years later in 1997, De Lint’s work, along with Laurell K. Hamilton (author of the Anita Blake series) and a few other fantasy authors, is thought to be the pioneers of the genre.
Here are some of the best urban fantasy books that put the supernatural in the streets.
What Is Urban Fantasy?
The subgenre “urban fantasy” refers to stories that are typically set in a modern, urban environment; think New York City or London, for example. These tales feature supernatural elements that blend the fantastical with the familiar, inspiring readers to search for magic in their everyday lives.
Some popular titles within the past few decades have inspired adaptations of the material such as The Mortal Instrumentsby Cassandra Clare which was made into a movie (City of Bones) and a TV show (Shadowhunters), Percy Jackson & The Olympians by Rick Riordan that was adapted into two movies (Lightning Thief and Sea of Monsters) and a Disney+ TV series of the same name, and Vampire Diariesby Richelle Mead which became a successful 8 season TV series. While not every story gets its screen time, there are plenty that deserve a spot on your shelves.
