After The Forest Readalong

We're all thinking Mathias may be the bear, right? Like that has to be the direction this is headed…

Chapter Nine

It's the end of the evening and still, Greta has not seen Jacob. Mathias suggests that she go home and he offers to walk her.

On the way back, Greta sees Christof and he asks for a word. He presses her to accept his proposal of marriage, and they argue. He tells Greta that she is unlikely to receive another proposal, but still she refuses, and continues on home.

Mathias has overheard their argument. She tells him about her strangeness, her background and experiences with witchcraft. Including what happened to her and her brother in the witch's hut all those years ago.

Greta is surprised that Mathias seems relaxed about talk of witchcraft and he responds that he's seen a great deal of the world and many things.

When Greta returns home, she does not find Jacob but she does find Hans. Hans speaks to her about Christof's proposal. Still she refuses to be sold.

That is until Hans tells her that he's already accepted on her behalf and she's to leave to be wed right away.

Chapter Ten

Hans leads Greta into the woods to Christof and she slips away from him easily.

However, it's Christof who finds her and grabs her, telling her to be quiet as they are set upon by wolves. Before the wolves can attack, they are distracted by the large black bear who fends them off Greta.

Greta runs away as they're pushed back by the bear. She makes her way toward Rob's property and leaves Christof behind. Rob finds her and she tells him what happened.

They go together into the woods and find Conran, Mira and the other soldiers. One holds a wolf pelt and is performing a ceremony on Christof.

Rob tells them not to, and Christof pleads with them but they don't listen. Conran slices Christof's palm but before anything else could happen, Rob slices his own palm and makes contact with the pelt.

Suddenly he transforms into a wolf and so do the other men. Mira is standing at their side demanding they stop and she grabs Greta, telling her to be calm so that she can channel more power.

The wolves are stopped by Christof who levels a musket on Conran, shooting at him.

Mira uses a little bit more power and stops the wolves, turning them back.

Then Greta, spent, passes out.

Chapter Eleven

While Greta is pretending to still be unconscious, Rob and Mira talk over her. Mira tells Rob that Greta is a greenwitch and must be trained as a witch, while Rob disagrees. He believes she should become a mother and a wife and lead a better life than one attending to magic.

Mira tells him that Greta's choice will be up to her as she will tell her about her gift. When Rob leaves to join the other wolves, Mira asks Greta about her mother and tells her about her abilities. They go together into the forest where Mira shows her how to feel the magic. Greta is able to but then hears the church bell and remembers Jacob.

She apologizes to Mira, telling her that she will be back but that she needs to go to church in order to keep up appearances and to find her friend.

Chapter Twelve

Greta goes to the church and notices that the whole congregation is outside. Someone has died.

Mathias comes and grabs her hand and she immediately knows that it's Jacob who has been killed. The town leaders discuss who could have killed him. The Bavarians? No, they decide it's the work of wolves or bears. Brigitta shares that Greta saw a bear and Herr Hueber asks that Conran and his men go hunt whatever this animal is and destory it before it kills again.

Mathias goes with them and Greta is upset to know that he would harm any animals.

When she returns to the cottage she sees Hans going through Jacob's belongings, stealing his coin. She yells at him and tells him how foul he is, and that he's no good. He leaves and she starts to hear a voice.

It's the book. They discuss her being a green witch and it tries to convince her that tattermagic isnt evil. It mocks her and  Greta thinks to destroy it but hides it under the hearthstone instead.
