Please don't kill Anton, please don't kill Anton...* crosses fingers*

Chapter Twenty-Six:

Galipei goes to August and tells him that it's done, he's poisoned Otta in the hospital.

August asks if she's dead. Galipei says not yet, but soon.

•·················•·················•

There are six players left. Calla and Anton are eating at the diner talking about the games. August gets a ping on his pager from the hospital and goes to see Otta.

Calla tells Anton that she loves him and he says it back.  Anton still goes to Otta while Calla wonders why he can't let go of her.

Chapter Twenty-Seven:

Calla goes to see August at the wall and Anton shows up. He tells her that the hospital doesn't know what went wrong with Otta, only that her vitals are all over the place.

August approaches them telling Calla that Galipei needs something for her. He asks to speak alone with Anton.

•·················•·················•

August asks Anton how he's doing and how Otta is doing but he scoffs. In the distance, Anton hears fighting and August tells him not to interfere.

Calla is fighting a player, who when she sees August goes for him instead. Leida shouts at the figure "Vaire, stop". The figure pulls off his his face covering and awaits further instructions from August. It's not Vaire, August asks Leida why she thought it would be, and August places Ledia under arrest.

•·················•·················•

Calla wants to leave. Galipei had given her instructions not to kill anyone, and that no one was in danger, they were merely flushing out the "rural intruders" targeting players in the game.

Calla makes to leave and August asks her where she's going. She responds that he's on his own for this business, and leaves with Anton.

Chapter Twenty-Eight:

Leida is in a cell and accuses August of setting her up and planning to take the throne when Kasa dies.

August asks her if she believes he'd be a bad king and she responds that he'd do well for awhile, but eventually San-Er will need freedoms that August would be unwilling to give.

She tells him he'd be a tyrant, in the end. She continues telling August truths he does not want to hear and she leaves. She will be in that cell forever.

•·················•·················•

August and Galipei talk about the games. He's deactivated player number six so they are down to five players.

August tells him that he's concerned about Calla, he feels that she is too attached to Anton.

They discuss Calla's plan but August is convinced that only his plan to depose Kasa will work. August tells Galipei that Calla is going to disobey him and Galipei asks August if he'd like him to put a stop to it.

August nods.

•·················•·················•

Anton and Calla are resting on top of a shop stoop when both of their wristbands start to tremble.

A hammer swings down on Anton and Calla deflects it. The hammer comes down again and it hits her hard in the shoulder. Anton slashes the attackers throat when someone hauls Anton off with a cloth clamped over his mouth.

Calla is hit from behind and falls unconscious.

•·················•·················•

Callas wakes up in a dirty puddle wondering where Anton is. She realizes a palace-hire has taken him and knows that August is behind the attack.

As she passes a dentist she notices a glint in the glass and dodges a throwing star. Throwing stars follow her as she runs. It's player 12, a Weisanna.

The woman pounces on Calla and tells her to kill her and play the games right. Calla responds that she doesn't know if it's Galipei but if it is, he's effed.

Calla reaches for her sword and plunges it into the woman. The games are down to two...her and player number 86.

Chapter Twenty-Nine:

Calla makes her way to the coliseum and is greeted by August. He asks her what's more important to her, her love or the kingdom. Calla doesn't answer.

A dark figure makes their way from the farthest end of the coliseum. It's Anton.

Overhead, a booming announcement tells them to ready themselves for battle. Anton reaches Calla and tells her that they can always leave.

Calla tells him it's too late.

It's then that something is breaking in her chest, and Calla swings at Anton. Anton pleads with Calla. He tells her to kill him if she loves her kingdom more. Calla stills. They spar a few steps more and then drops her sword.

Anton's knives fall from his hands. They fall to the ground together and then Calla sinks a blade into Anton. The crowd cheers and Calla's eyes glow royal yellow.

Chapter Thirty:

Calla wins the games and she goes to a banquet in the palace. King Kasa declares her victor. King Kasa extends Calla a clipboard and she grabs him, pulling out her sword, slashing his head clean off.

Galipei tells the guards to seize her.

•·················•·················•

Elsewhere in the hospital morgue a body burning bright awakens and Otta demands to be taken to the Palace Of Earth.

Chapter Thirty-One:

Galipei goes to Calla's cell and asks her to come with him. She's grieving Anton but Galipei lifts her up. She's taken to servants who are told to bathe her, clearing her of the blood of the games.

She goes to August who for some reason has black eyes and she asks him if he's ready to be crowned. He says yes and she places the crown on him. August is Talin's newest ruler.

Calla addresses the crowd to cries of "long live the king!".

Calla speaks encouragingly to August who responds with "And what fine daylight we have today to ensure its longevity in their memory".

Calla has not crowned August. She's placed Anton Makusa on the throne.

The shriek that erupted from me with that last sentence was no less than ear piercing. TEAM ANTON!

 Questions:

  1. 🤥 How how how did Anton jump into August?
  2.

❓ Do you think August is actually the one dead?
  3. 🔪 What is Otta going to do?
