The story continues...
Chapter 36:
Aziza finds the nymph that gave her lock of hair to the hag staggering around the borderlands, completely void of magic, and begging to return to Elphame. They strike a deal. Aziza approaches the gateway tree, and using her magic much to the hag’s fiery fury, cleaves it in half. Surrounded by fire, Aziza jumps down into the hag’s den.
Chapter 37:
Leo decides, much to Tristan’s dismay, that they will all go after Aziza, Hazel included.
They watch the inferno follow Aziza down into the hole beneath the ruined gateway tree, and leaving Hazel up above, they go in after. They find another gateway tree, the one the opposite of the one just destroyed, which has Aziza pinned in its branches. Aziza is trying to use her magic to fight off the hag, and while she does so Tristan starts to climb up to what is the hags heart, to destroy it and kill her.
Chapter 38:
Tristan climbs, the branches he’s grabbing burning him. Aziza is managing to block the hag from killing him, and he stabs the heart, falling after he has done so.
Chapter 39:
They escape back into the borderlands as the hag is dying. The borderlands slowly turning back into the normal forest. Problem is, Tristan is dying too. Aziza has an idea. She asks Tristan to bond himself to her instead. She takes over, and lets all of the magic the hag had stolen over the years go, but allows Tristan to be a necromancer again. The hag dies and Tristan lives.
Chapter 40:
Back at home Leo and Hazel’s parents reveal they discovered Hazel was a changeling, and when Hazel’s fairy mother came back to take her their mom dosed her with oil and burned her alive. Before dying, the fairy set the curses.
At a coffee shop Leo tells Tristan that he can stay with him at his house - his parent’s have okayed it already. Tristan is overwhelmed.
Chapter 42:
Plans must be made. Hazel needs to figure out how to help Hazel stay in their world if she wants to, to repair the veils between Elphame and Blackthorn, to search for Meryl who has vanished, and to figure out what the bond between herself and Tristan means. One thing at a time.
