Chapter 28:
Aziza, Leo and Tristan return a baby kraken to its mother, and in the retreat nearly get caught up in the kraken’s whirlpool, throwing Tristan overboard. Chief (the selkie) retrieves him but Leo had the strong urge to jump in after him.
Chapter 29:
The Chief gives Aziza a token that they need to break in the gateway tree to signal the selkies to flood the roots. Tristan is sure he can get the hounds to do the job for them, but as soon as he goes to do so the hag breaks the bond between him and the hounds, and the hound attacks.
Chapter 30:
Aziza tells Tristan to throw her the token, and when he does the hound transfers its sight to her, eventually mauling her hand and swallowing the token before disappearing into the shadows. Leo drives them to the hospital.
Chapter 31:
Leo’s dad calls to tell him Hazel is missing, and although Tristan protests, Leo leaves the hospital without him. At home he finds that Hazel has been conversing with woodsprites, and that the hag had somehow gotten into her head. His parents want to tell him something about Hazel but Leo won’t listen. On the way to the woods Leo calls Tristan back but again refuses to waste time coming to get him.
Chapter 32:
Tristan finds Aziza, now bandaged up, and tells her that the hag has Hazel and Leo has gone after her. She confronts him on her theory that Tristan has been working with the hag the whole time, so he finally confesses that he’s the true love Leo was cursed to lose.
Chapter 33:
Aziza makes one last call to Jiddo, who begs her not to go, but Aziza says goodbye.
Chapter 34:
Leo catches up to Hazel in the forest, but she runs from him, unnaturally fast. She starts screaming, and transforms into a fairy. This was the secret their parents had kept. They fall into a hole in the hag’s territory where Leo assumes she wants to hold them until Aziza follows in pursuit.
Tristan and Aziza split up - Aziza is going to find the hag while Tristan is tasked with getting Leo and Hazel away. He comes upon the hound that swallowed the token, and when it hesitates to attack him Tristan cuts open the stomach and retrieves the token.
He finds Leo and Hazel, but the hag is punishing him through the bond. When the torture stops he knows it’s because Aziza arrived at the gateway tree.
