The story continues...

Chapter 29:
That night Addie locks her windows and doors, draws her curtains, and doesn’t set an alarm.

Chapter 30:
Addie has a nightmare and wakes again in the woods, Lenora telling her that if she wants to find out the truth to follow her.

Lenora takes them out in a row boat, away from the listening island and Jonah, who are one and the same. Lenora tells Addie that she has been trying to find her sister, but she can only come out at night. She also reveals that Jonah appeared to them about a week after they arrived on the island all those years ago, asking them to keep him a secret. When Lenora starts rowing back, the waves pick up, crushing the row boat and throwing Addie into the sea. She surfaces and holds on to a piece of the boat.

Chapter 31:
The currents take her back to land, and after getting cleaned up Addie heads to the lighthouse to wait for Billy. He hasn’t forgiven her, but she tags along as they empty rat traps. Addie is wary of telling Billy everything knowing that the island listens. Billy pulls a trap out and inside is a package, and when Addie rips it open it is a flower sitting in blood red sap that when the petals unfurl say Addie’s name.

Chapter 32:
Addie and Billy take kayaks out in the ocean to talk. She tells him everything and he agrees to help her figure out what Jonah did to Violet and Lenora, and hopefully prevent it from happening to Addie.

Chapter 33:
Addie decides to make amends with Violet by giving her her pendant, which Violet accepts. Violet tells her that Lenora was often writing about Jonah in her diary and what happened on the day she died. She followed Lenora and Jonah down into the caves, where Jonah had taken Lenora through the long tunnel. Violet tried to follow, but got stuck.

Chapter 34:
Addie finds Lenora’s diary at the Wells house, and in it she writes of similar experiences with Jonah. Just then Jonah himself appears, asking her to come with him - he wants to show her something. He also says it wasn’t he who killed the sisters.

Chapter 35:
Jonah tells Addie that he met Eulalie on the island, and after he revealed to her that he has a fiancé back in England she got angry and trapped him here, sailing away on his boat.

 Questions:

  1. Jonah claims to not have killed the sisters - who/what do you think did?
  2. What do you think Jonah is intent on showing Addie?
  3. Why do you think Lenora is only able to come out at night?
  4. Do you think Lenora was right that the island loved Violet, not herself?
