The story begins...

Chapter 7:
Leelo accidentally waves at the boy across the lake. He startles when something falls into the water, and she realizes it is a small bird. He tries to save it, but of course it will have died. As she watches him bury the hatchling Sage appears and sees him, saying they should report the sighting to the council. Leelo begs her not to.

Chapter 8:

Jaren and his sister Story go to the market, overhearing a man tell a story about a giant wolf as he brandishes a large fang.

Chapter 9:
It is the day each Endlan family sacrifices an animal to the Forest - after this it will be fully awake for spring.

Chapter 10:
On a bet Jaren had gone back to the lake to collect a vial of water, but he wasn’t prepared to see so many animals being sacrificed, alongside the haunting song.

Chapter 11:
They are having dinner with the Hollis family as their youngest daughter, Violet, will also be leaving the village when Tate does in just a few days. Mr. Harding reveals the Isola had been hiding Pieter in a secret location, but she won’t reveal where.

Chapter 12:
A man at the pub tells Jaren there’s a girl who lives in the village that is from Endla. He tracks her down at the market and when she finds out Jaren really went to the lake, she offers to answer his questions.

Chapter 13:
It is the day Tate is to leave the Island and Leelo and Sage have Watcher duty. They have an argument and get separated, Leelo now wanting to follow a bird that’s singing in her voice. She comes upon a hut hidden in the woods, where Pieter must have stayed. She catches up to Sage, not revealing what she found.

Chapter 14:
Lupin takes Jaren for a walk, telling him more about Endla. She tells him that the Endlans have a symbiotic relationship with the Wandering Forest on the island. In exchange for protection, they lure in sacrifices.

 Questions:

  1. Where do you think Tate and the other incantu will go?

  2. What do you think Sage was referring to when she said her mom did more for Leelo and her family than Leelo knows?

  3. Why do you think Jaren has not felt the urge to go to the island when others who hear the songs have?

  4. Do you think the Wandering Forest really is protecting the Endlans?
