The story continues...

Chapter 12:
Zarela doesn’t leave the property, instead sitting herself on a bench, determined to keep her word and not leave until Arturo agrees to work with her. She spends the night on that bench. The next day she is forced to relieve herself in the shrubs as she is barred from the outhouse, and when she returns she finds the bench gone.

Chapter 13:
After another miserable night outside, in the rain this time, Arturo finally invites Zarela inside, feeding her. Zarela offers him more compensation, and in the end he caves and agrees to help her train to become a Dragonador.

Chapter 14:
They ride back to Santivilla, but on the way are attacked by a dragon. Arturo gives her a special cloak and tells her to hide under it until it is safe, but wanting to know what is happening, Zarela looks out from under it, only for the dragon to spot her. The guards are able to injure the dragon, but it flies away before it can be caught. There is nothing more dangerous than a wounded dragon.

Chapter 15:
They arrive back in Santivilla, and the dragons they have caged with them draw a crowd as they approach La Giralda. To her delight, Zarela sees her father standing to greet them, but Arturo seems unimpressed. Her father tells them to meet him in his office immediately.

Zarela heads to the kitchen to get food to bring to her father’s office, but when she arrives outside she overhears them already deep in conversation. They evidently know each other. Once she joins them, they refuse to tell her just how they know each other, but her father does reveal that Arturo owes him a debt from his Dragonador days. Once Arturo makes his exit Zarela reveals everything she did to keep La Giralda afloat, and although he disapproves, her father can’t find fault in it.

Chapter 16:
Zarela takes her father back to bed and then finds Arturo in the dragon cages. He tells her that someone used very strong magic down there. Zarela tells him all that happened on the day of the masacre, and the killing of the remaining dragons the following morning. Arturo demands to have all the keys accounted for, and warns Zarela to trust no one. He doesn’t rule out that the Asociación was behind the attacks, but thinks it more likely if they are that they are being helped by someone else. They will start Zarela’s training the next day.

 Questions:

  1. What sort of history do you think is between Arutro and Zarela's father? What debt do you think is owed?
  2. Do you think we will see the escaped injured dragon again?
  3. With Zarela's fear of dragons do you think she'll actually be able to overcome and become a Dragonador?
  4. Do you think Zarela's father did something to anger other members of the Gremia? Why do you think other arenas haven't suffered the same fate as La Giralda?
