What's in my Book Bag?

By: Brittany

Hello and welcome to this month's "What's In My Bag" with me, Brittany! I am an avid reader of fantasy, cozy mystery, and contemporary romances with a dash of sci-fi. Sometimes, I like to get inspired by books I pick up on my travels or when I go to my local library, which is almost all the time. When I find a book or check it out, it goes into my trusty bookish tote bag, and I dig into it every week to see what little pearls of treasures I may find. There is no reason for my madness- I just let my tote bag decide what world and adventure I'll go on next

Last month, I took part in the Words & Whimsy Reading Challenge. Let me tell you, it was an absolute blast. I devoured a dozen books, and a couple of them left a mark that I couldn't ignore. My top pick for the month has to be A Lesson in Vengeance by the brilliant Victoria Lee. I was so smitten with this book that I couldn't resist jotting down oodles of quotes, prompting me to grab a physical copy for some good old-fashioned annotating. Ace of Spades by Faridah Abike-Iyimide also captivated me with its wild, Gossip Girl-meets-Pretty Little Liars vibes. And then there was Over My Dead Body by Sweeney Boo, which combined alluring artwork with a thrilling murder mystery and some dark academia flair.

Now, let's delve into this month as I take you on an enthusiastic moonlit walk through my tote:

In Every Generation - Kendare Blake

As a die-hard Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, I couldn't resist this. It's all about Willow's daughter, and rumour has it that my favourite bad-boy vampire, Spike, makes an appearance. How could I not include this in my TBR?

A Multitude of Dreams - Mara Rutherford

I had the pleasure of meeting the author at a recent book event where she raved about this Edgar Allan Poe retelling. With its captivating cover and fresh take on a classic, I decided to heed her advice and make it an October read.

Assistant to the Villain - Hannah Nicole Maehrer

When TikTok sensation Hannah Nicole Maehrer announced her book, I was all in. Her "morally gray villain's assistant" videos were too good to pass up, and I preordered this intriguing tale in a heartbeat.

When the Crow’s Away - Auralee Wallace

Last year, I fell head over heels for the first book in the In the Company of Witches cozy mystery series. Alexandra Roselyn recommended it to me, and now I'm continuing the magical adventures with When the Crow's Away.

Court of the Vampire Queen - Katee Robert

Katee Robert has earned my trust, and her collection of three vampire novellas, wrapped in a stunning cover, felt like the perfect autumn read. Hot vampires and a gorgeous cover? Sold.

Divine Rivals - Rebecca Ross

At a book event with Mara Rutherford, I got a special shout-out from Rebecca Ross for my Edgar Allan Poe attire. That's instant cool points in my book! Plus, the cover of Divine Rivals is simply stunning, even if I did spill a smidge of tea on it (don't worry, it's cleaned up now).

The Late Mrs. Willoughby - Claudia Gray

A bookseller's recommendation led me to the second book in the Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney Mystery series, and I couldn't agree more. Intriguing mysteries are afoot, and the prospect of a third book on the horizon is icing on the cake.

Such Sharp Teeth - Rachel Harrison

While I haven't gotten to Cackle just yet, the allure of a new werewolf novel in Such Sharp Teeth was irresistible. With its striking cover, I'm going in blind, ready to uncover a thrilling supernatural tale.

World of Warcraft: Illidan - William King

My love for all things demon-related shines through once again. This book delves into the story of Illidan Stormrage, and the cover perfectly captures the essence of World of Warcraft. I'm particularly excited to dive into this one, as Illidan is a favourite character of mine.

My Plain Jane - Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows (OwlCrate Edition)

I couldn't resist the allure of the OwlCrate Edition of this Jane Eyre retelling. Ghosts, Jane Eyre, and a unique twist on the classic story? Count me in!

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy - Megan Bannen

Last year, I couldn't resist grabbing this book solely based on its stunning cover. With a mix of letter-writing, a sheriff, an undertaker (not the wrestler, mind you), and enemies-to-lovers, I'm ready for a charming and thrilling read.

October Audiobook Reads

Audiobooks Steeped To Death, A Botanist

Death Overdue - Allison Brook - Tis the season for cozy mysteries, and Death Overdue looks like a spooktacular choice. Set in a Haunted Library with an adorable cat in a pumpkin bucket, it promises ghosts, a tantalizing mystery, and a dash of feline charm.

Steeped to Death - Gretchen Rue - Another cozy mystery audiobook, this time centered around a magical tea shop. With murder afoot in a tea shop that resembles Fortnum and Mason, and, of course, another cute kitty on the cover, I'm excited to sip on this one.

A Botanist’s Guide to Flowers and Fatality - Kate Khavari - If you haven't already dived into the Saffron Everleigh books, you're missing out. Saffron is a botany student and amateur sleuth, and I can't wait to uncover the mysteries in this new installment. Plus, I've got the title of the third book to look forward to!

This month felt like the perfect time to immerse myself in all things spooky. I'm eagerly anticipating these reads and embracing the coziness of the season. Have you read any of these books? I'd love to hear your thoughts, and please share your favourite October read!
