Our July book is a slow-burn that follows a fated pair from disenfranchised mining towns who, having met as children, travel to the capital to test their magical potential. There, they uncover secrets revealing that their society's basis is a lie: magical individuals are not fated but chosen. Following this discovery, they part ways, one remaining in the capital while the other returns home. As adults, their paths cross again, placing them in the midst of a violent class war that threatens to put them on opposing sides when an old flame demands a betrayal.
