I’ll admit it! I was obsessed with watching the dystopian genre take off in the 2010’s. From talking about it with my friends, to teachers basing lessons around dystopian themes, and finally watching it play in the theaters, I couldn’t help spending hours creating mood boards of all my favorite stories and their characters. But there was one problem. I wasn't a reader. I could only watch what was adapted into movies and TV shows, and even that didn’t show the entire story.

Picking up reading as an adult meant I could come back to a genre I’ve always held so close to my heart and experience it in a whole new way! Because of that, I’m here to give you a few hot, new recommendations for some of the best dystopian romance books published in recent years. With seven novels to choose from, all of them guarantee to throw you into a world of imbalance and chaos, with romance to make things a little more bittersweet.

Some Of The Best New Dystopian Romance Books Published Throughout 2025 & 2026

Until I Die by Deidra Duncan

Standalone

Published: January 2026

Spice Level: Mild (🌶️🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Violence, PTSD, Trauma, Physical and Emotional Abuse, War (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

Within the ashes of what used to be the United States, democracy has crumbled, and the law has taken on a new shape. In this fictional future, women are stripped of their rights, and everything is upended. That’s when a group called the Defiance begins working together to take back their power.

When Sophia is tasked with trading information with a blood colonel from the inside, she knows she can’t decline, but that doesn’t make this mysterious man any less dangerous.

Soon, forced proximity brings them together, but what gets uncovered when the secrets begin to spill? And will their forbidden romance be enough to withstand all the secrets that still lie buried between them?

With a heavy, thought-provoking narrative that balances a strong romantic connection between the main characters, this dark dystopian romance won’t be an easy read for everyone. The clear enemies-to-lovers trope, with the main characters fighting on opposite sides, is a convincing premise that’ll get me excited about a book without any further explanation.

Until I Die is nothing short of haunting and beautiful. If you’re ready to read something life-changing, prepare to be captivated by Deidra’s amazing worldbuilding and swoon-worthy quotes.

Veronica Roth does an amazing job blending so many different kinds of genres in this novel: dystopian, sci-fi, fantasy, romance, and she does it with wonderfully written prose.

With more of her books coming out this year (*cough* I’m dying for The Sixth Faction!!) this would be the perfect series to dive into while trying to fight the anticipation.

Nothing is more dangerous than being a modified person on the Continent, where the government has its hands in everything. If you’re even suspected of having special abilities or aiding rebel groups, they won’t hesitate to have you executed.

Wren Darlington knows all about that because she's spent her whole life in hiding while strengthening her own abilities. But when she picks up the notice of a guard with her weaponry skills, she's pulled into an elite group of assassins that take out people just like her.

Thinking this will be a great opportunity to take down the corruption from the inside, Wren is not prepared to have a hot, commanding officer looking over her, one who may prove to be more of a distraction than she intended.

Silver Elite was one of the most talked-about dystopian romance novels in 2025. Many of my friends couldn’t stop mentioning how easy it was to fall into this world given the early dystopian nostalgia, and I couldn’t agree more. Not to mention the added kick of spice that Dani Francis writes into the story. The tension between commander and trainee just got hotter with a slow burn, enemies-to-lovers that proves there’s always space for love in the darkest times.

If you haven't started this series yet, you’re just in time! You can read Silver Elite and Broken Dove, which was released in May 2026, while you wait for the announcement of the final book.

The Illumination by Asher D Payne

Book #1 in The New World series

Published: June 2025

Spice Level: Medium (🌶️🌶️🌶️ - May vary per book. Please do your own research before reading)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Blood, Death, Physical Harm, Sexual Content (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

Living inside the walls after the Fall, Astrid’s job as a Venturer is to face the dangers of the Wild and complete tasks given to her by the government. But when she crosses paths with the most wanted power user who brings the threat of rebellion, Astrid will have to maneuver through the web of lies she begins to uncover while trying to survive the beasts that lurk around every corner.

Will she conform back to the system she left, will her newfound interest in this rebel leader take her toward a new path, or is she the unreliable narrator twisting the story from behind the scenes?

This completed dystopian dark romance series will have you questioning your sanity. With five books and two novellas, the one rule to know going into it is to trust. absolutely. no. one.

This is a series that truly builds upon itself the more you read, so if you’re up for the most jaw-dropping twists and turns with brilliant representation of the LGBTQ+ community, be sure to add it to your TBR!

Conform by Ariel Sullivan

Book #1 in the Reform series

Published: October 2025

Spice Level: Medium (🌶️🌶️🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Violence, Ableism, Discrimination, Social Inequality (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

From the ashes of the old world, there’s not much to do other than live in limbo and go about your day trying to survive. Stripped of so much, women are able to help with the decrease in human population by entering a procreation contract, where they’re paired with an Elite to fall into bed with and create more children.

Some may see this as an honor, but Emeline wants to believe there is more to a person than what they can offer physically. So, she keeps her head down, at least for as long as she can before she’s chosen as a Mate for Collin, a high-ranking member of the Illum (a technologically advanced group that rules the city).

With so many uneasy questions about the society and its rules, Emeline will have to seek the answers one way or another, but who can she really trust when she discovers this society’s dark secret? Collin, or the dangerous resistance leader who has taken an interest in her?

What was the other big trope on screens back in the 2010s? Oh, yeah, drumroll please… The famous love triangle! You’ve seen it in the likes of Twilight and/or The Hunger Games, but when you combine the hair-pulling trope with a dystopian concept like The Handmaid's Taleit’s no wonder why you’ll struggle to choose between the MMC’s when even Emeline can’t.

Thankfully, the next book, Core, is coming early next year, which means more romance, more drama, and an impossible choice that can change everything.

To Cage a Wild Bird by Brooke Fast

Book #1 in the Divided Fates series

Published: September 2025

Spice Level: Medium (🌶️🌶️🌶️)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Violence, Torture, Death, Grief, Blood, Mature Language (Note: This list doesn't include all content warnings. Please do your own research before reading this book.)

If there’s one rule you’re going to want to follow, it’s making sure you don’t commit a crime in Dividium. The punishment? A life sentence in Endlock, where the wealthy hunt the prisoners.

Raven Thorne works as a bounty hunter, slipping through the shadows and keeping a low profile, but when her brother gets arrested and sent to Endlock, she doesn’t hesitate to try to save him.

Raven must use her cunning and wits to maneuver through the prison while trying to avoid the prison guard she can’t seem to take her eyes off of. She’ll say she hates him, but his growing interest has her heart beating fast.

Her only duty here was to save her brother, but when the chance to tear down the system presents itself, will Raven choose her family, the world, or her heart? If she could choose them all, would hesitation lead to her downfall?

If you’re a fan of Deadman Wonderland and/or The Hunger Games series, you’ll love this take on a prison-based dystopian romance.

When the definition of forced proximity is taken to the next level, you start to understand how fast things can get heated between the main characters. Too bad this isn’t a rom-com, because another deadly trial is always lurking around the corner. You’ll have to read it to find out if they will survive long enough to go from enemies to lovers!

This spicy dystopian media sensation is planned as a duology, with another book on the way. Only time will tell how the story will end, and with this marriage of inconvenience turning enemies to lovers, I can’t help but be on the edge of my seat until I get to read what happens next!

I’ve always had a soft spot for dystopian stories; being able to read and recommend these books is an absolute honor, and I’m so happy I became a reader just in time to enjoy them all.

With the rise of fantasy and romance books on social media, dystopian isn’t a genre that’s willing to be forgotten about that easily. These stories are a constant reflection of what too much greed and power can cause in the wrong hands. They're about being brave enough to stand up and make a difference, even when you feel the most defenseless. Bringing romance into this genre is so important for showing the contrast of finding the most wonderful things in the worst situations, and I hope it serves as a reminder that there can be a bright side to every shadow.

So set aside some time and pick one or more of these dystopian romance novels to obsess over. Happy reading!

Kaitlin Shea has never stopped believing in magic. Even when she felt separated and detached from herself, she knew she just needed one chance, a string of hope strong enough to pull her up and bring her back to life. It wasn't until she started reading that she was able to experience that magic everyday. Since 2023, Kaitlin has put the real world on hold while exploring mighty kingdoms, kicking her feet swoon worthy romances, and discovering creative foreshadowing for a gut wrenching plot twist that gives her a sense of belonging. There's nowhere she'd rather be than cozily tucked in with a heated blanket, her favorite iced drinks, and a good book to read.
