'The Buried and the Bound' Book Club Readalong Day 5!

Welcome to the fifth day of our book club readalong for OwlCrate's January book, The Buried and the Bound by Rochelle Hassan!

Just a reminder that this will be a SPOILER discussion for Chapters 23-27 of The Buried and the Bound, so make sure you read are finished this section before continuing.

Chapter 23:
Tristan wakes in the library, and instead of fleeing he explains his bond to the hag. He isn’t sure why she hasn’t killed him yet as she must know he has betrayed her. Meryl tells them that the last time the hag was awakened was 17 years before, and it was Aziza’s parents who subdued her. Tristan agrees to use his necromantic abilities on Aziza’s parents so they can speak.

Chapter 24:
Tristan reanimates Aziza’s parents and they tell them that 17 years ago they created the tunnels and the gateway tree, binding the hag to it, which is why the hag now wants Aziza. They say that if they destroy the tree that might destroy the hag.

Chapter 25:
Aziza, Leo and Tristan are patrolling Elphame searching for something that will help them defeat the hag. It’s then that Aziza gets the idea that maybe Meryl is a fae, and that maybe Meryl is strong enough to help them.

Chapter 26:
Leo and Tristan talk in the car, and Tristan decides to not tell him that if the hag dies he will as well.

Tristan goes to Elphame to finds the remnants of the Ash Witch, giving her a lock of his hair to potentially restore her as what happened was the hag’s fault. He gets the idea to use the hounds to attack the gateway tree from the outside, hopefully lessening the hag’s defenses.

Chapter 27:
Jiddo bids Aziza get out of his sight when she tells him what they did to her parents.

At the library Aziza confronts Meryl about being a selkie. Maryl confirms that someone stole her sealskin and therefore has complete control over her, but of course she can’t reveal who that is. Aziza wants to convince the other selkies to flood the base of the gateway tree, and she agrees to take them a message for Meryl.

The selkies agree to speak to Aziza, but for their help they require an exchange.

 Questions:
