The story continues...

Chapter 8:
Billy takes Addie to a freshwater sinkhole which apparently has tunnels leading to other places on the island. Resisting the urge to get in, Billy tells Addie that he too once was dead, and he thinks that’s why she can also see Violet. They part ways and agree to hang out again the next day, and when Addie coughs up a droplet of blood on the way back to the villa a plant instantly grows where it landed on the ground.

Chapter 9:
That night Addie dreams of a girl in a rowboat throwing an anchor tied to her waist overboard, looking at Addie for help.

Chapter 10:
Addie wakes in the middle of the woods and following a line of beetles comes back to the cenote Billy showed her earlier that day. Feeling compelled, Addie dives, and although she knows she shouldn’t, she stays under the water for a couple minutes, not feeling any pain. When she surfaces she is able to breathe without pain, take deep breaths. Sean joins her and tells her one of the reasons people aren’t supposed to dive in the water is because you can feel no pain. Together Addie and Sean dive again.

Chapter 11:
They dive down, Addie not wanting to stop, and reluctantly surfacing. She suggest to Sean that he could be a competitive free diver, but something about the suggestion seems to bother him. They agree to meet to dive again the following night.

Chapter 12:
Addie wakes late and decides to head to the beach to read. Violet gets her attention, wanting again to play hide and seek, and Addie complies, following her into the woods and back to Violet’s house. Violet reveals her corpse-like self to Addie, and gets her to follow her into a cavern beneath the house. Violet disappears, and Addie runs from the house, coughing up blood causing more of the plants from before to grow. On her wrist is a bracelet made from red string and grass - a gift from Violet.

Chapter 13:
That night they have a cook out with the Carpenters on the beach, but Sean doesn’t show. Addie tells Billy about her experience with Violet that day, and gets him to agree to help her figure out what happened to Violet and her family, and why Violet is still here. Back at the house she sets her alarm for midnight.

 Questions:

  1. Why do you think Violet is still lingering on the island? Do you think she is the only one?
  2. What do you think Sean meant by “the island likes you” when speaking to Addie? Why would it like her?
  3. Why do you think you aren’t able to feel pain in the cenote?
  4. Do you think the Carpenters know more about the island than they are letting on?
