The story continues...

Chapter 39:
Delaney is at her parent’s house with Adya. Colton appears at her door with a dress, and asks that she help him with plan B to get the creature in her out.

Chapter 40:
Delaney meets Colton and together they step through the sky, but really, they step through Purgatory, a small portion of Hell. He tells her that the darkness likes her because it likes in between places, and she is in between silence and sound - her own liminal space.

Chapter 41:
In the mirror world the atmosphere between them is tense, as Delaney has Colton’s bone shard tucked into her tights. He retrieves it and she slides it into her purse. He also finally admits that he is the boy she found at Walden Pond all those years ago. It’s time for Plan B.

Chapter 42:
Colton tells Delaney that previously he took all the other dead students into Hell when they were alive, but he left them there. They were supposed to find their own way out. It is the Apostle’s theory that if something immortal can inhabit the body of someone mortal they could live forever. In their world the Apostle's wife has died, but in this mirror world she is alive and well, and they are attending her art gallery. On the other hand in this world, the Apostle has died, so he wants to bring this version of her back to their world so they can be reunited.

They head out into the Boston night and follow a couple to a market. Colton wants Delaney to help him say goodbye to his brother, who in the mirror world is alive and happy - married with a pregnant wife. Colton has been to many mirror worlds, and in all of them either his brother is dead or he is. He gives Delaney a gift for the baby, which she delivers.

Chapter 43:
They travel back home through Hell, the darkness speaking to them.

Chapter 44:
Back at Colton’s house the dead follow them, and Delaney is surprised she hadn’t noticed them before. But when she commands the dead to still, they do. The creature inside her gives praise.

Chapter 45:
Delaney orders Colton to come to her, and he does, responding like one of the shades.

Chapter 46:
👀

Chapter 47:
Delaney asks Colton how he survived the ice. He asks her why she's sure he did.

 Questions:

  1. Do you think Colton is somehow actually dead?

  2. Why do you think Colton has a much stronger power to survive in Hell than the others?
  3. Now that Delaney has realized she can command the shades, do you think she will learn to work with the creature inside her? Or do you think she'll be able expel it?
  4. What are your predictions for the last section of the book?
