By: Jordan Fleming Photo By: @a.o.tales

Amber and I are BACK this July for a fun new readalong! We're about to start our monthly discussion for our June "If The Fates Allow" book, Threads That Bind by Kika Hatzopoulou!

As a reminder, from now on, our monthly discussions will be both here on the OwlCrate blog AND on The Nest! Go check out Amber's discussion that will be full of fun extras like bookish charades, shelf scavenger hunts and coloring pages!

On each day we'll read a section of Threads That Bind both on the blog and in The Nest's group, and then discuss in the comments our theories and predictions. This means there will be spoilers for each section! Beware!

Just a reminder that this will be a SPOILER discussion for the prologue and chapters 1-4 of Threads That Bind, so make sure you read or are finished this section before continuing.

Oh I love a high urban fantasy setting...

The Prologue:

Our story jumps into the action by showing us a city sinking underwater, mentions goddesses of Fate, and an older woman who befalls a sinister fate at the hands of a magic wielder who snips her life string.

Chapter One :

We are introduced to three sisters, Io, Thais and Ava who are all moira-born, a rarity in the world they live in. Descendents of the goddesses of Fate are able to magically manipulate threads of Fate in themselves and others. Io's sisters all use moira gifts differently, and Io has a thread of fated love.

The story opens with Io, who is walking along the rooftop high above the Sunken City of Atlante. As a moira-born private investigator, she's working on an infidelity case.

She traverses the rooftop to spy on the couple she is investigating and uses her moira-born abilities to see the Quilt, a tangle of threads that make up everyone's Fates. However, she sees not two but three people when she looks, and one person has no threads except a life thread that has been severed...

Io leaves her perch and goes across to the apartment to find that the man she was investigating for an affair has been killed by the other person. An old woman, using her severed life thread as a weapon.

The older woman explains that she's killed him because of his crimes. She then turns to Io and tells her the same before attacking her.

Io yells for the younger woman the man was having an affair with to hide. Io runs to yell for help but the woman catches up with her. Io braces for the impact of the woman's severed thread but instead, the woman loses balance and crashes through a window to the flooded street below.

One of Io's threads pulse and follows down the stairs toward someone running up. It's a boy, the boy of her fate thread. The one she is destined to love.

 Chapter 2:

Io comforts the young woman in the apartment, Nina and tells her that the man she was having an affair with is dead. Io stays to talk to the police, who have a lot of questions because Io is moira-born.

Io explains to the police that they were attacked by the severed life thread old woman and everyone agrees that it should not be possible that she's alive.

Io offers the term wraith to describe her, which in her opinion is better than using the word ghost.

The police leave but there is another knock at the door. It's Io's fated thread boy, Edei, and he's there to take Io to his boss.

Chapter 3:

We travel back to be filled in on the details of Io's and her sister's moira-born thread gifts were Io learns that Edei exists, but at the time he has a girlfriend and she does not want to come between them...

Chapter 4:

Edei takes Io to see the mob queen of The Silts, Bianca Rossi. Bianca rules The Silts and does a quite fine job of it. She meets Io and talks to her about her sisters before two mobsters drag in the wraith Io was attacked by.

Bianca asks Io for her opinion on the wraith and informs her that the wraith has killed one of her men and that this woman isn't the first killer that they've found in The Silts.

While they're distracted the wraith attempts to attack Bianca with her thread but is shot by one of Bianca's henchmen and Io uses her threads to cut the wraith's severed life line. It dies.

Bianca then recruits Io to serve her as a private investigator, partnered with Edei. She's to use her moira-born gifts to investigate the wraiths for Bianca...

Or else.
