The story continues...

Chapter 19:
The council is squabbling over everything - resources, the beasts, Raya. The king has taken the uncertainty in the land to make headway into Lunesse for Auveny. Balica won’t like this once things have calmed, but the king doesn’t seem to mind, noting that they could “crush” them if it came to war.

In the king’s study he asks Violet to speak at Cyrus and Raya’s wedding, making the Fate’s blessing official in the minds of the people. He also mentions that he wants to keep ruling for a year or more, even though previously it was thought he would abdicate to Cyrus once he was married.

Violet and Dante go out to practice sparring, Dante wanting to know more about what’s happening between Cyrus and Violet. Violet sees in his threads that Cyrus once promised to never invade Balica once he was king. Violet comes to the conclusion that the Fate’s want a war, and the reason they want Cyrus dead is because his becoming king is the only path that prevents it.

That night Violet dreams of the Fate that’s not a Fate, who taunts her. It’s the witch.

Chapter 20:
Violet falls ill for a few days, but when her fever breaks the voice stops appearing in her dreams. Cyrus takes her to see Nadiya, encouraging her to lie to her about the wedding day to soothe some of her worries. Violet does lie, but also when she takes Nadiya’s hands she can’t see anything, like her magic isn’t working.

After, while walking Violet back to her tower, Cyrus asks her to come to his study.

Chapter 21:
Cyrus asks Violet to lie to his father, to prophesize that the king must abdicate. Violet resists still, unwilling to throw away years of goodwill. Cyrus is determined to see his own version of Auveny when he is king, even if that means making enemies of everyone, including Violet.

Chapter 22:
The day of the wedding arrives, Violet still without her sight, and contemplating exactly what to say at the wedding. Using words to please the king, but leaving things open enough for Cyrus to use for his own plans in the future. The palace fairies arrive to prepare her.

At the ceremony Lady Ziza accosts Violet, seeming to know some of what has been happening between herself and Cyrus. Cyrus arrives, and before the ceremony begins, Violet asks him if he’s in love with her, to which he claims he does not know. All is quiet, but before there ceremony can start the double doors open, and two identical Raya’s clamber into the room fighting.
