Amber and I are BACK this October for a fun new readalong! We're about to start our monthly discussion for our August Adult book (recommended by those 18+), Masters Of Death by Olivie Blake!

As a reminder, from now on, our monthly discussions will be both here on the OwlCrate blog AND on The Nest! Go check out Amber's discussion that will be full of fun extra content!

On each day we'll read a section of Masters Of Death, both on the blog and in The Nest's group, and then discuss in the comments our theories and predictions. This means there will be spoilers for each section! Beware!

Just a reminder that this will be a SPOILER discussion for chapters 4-8 of Masters Of Death , so make sure you read or are finished this section before continuing.

DEATH IS A DADDY! This book gets 5 gold stars and some chicken nuggies already.

Chapter Four:

A demon, a reaper named Calix knocks on Fox's front door for a visit. He comes in, makes small talk with Fox and then sits down. He asks Fox whether he's seen someone named "Mayra" and Fox asks Calix if he'd like him to summon her for him.

Calix says no, Fox summons her anyway and she appears in a heavenly glimmer.

Mayra is an angel.

•·················•·················•

We learn that Mayra was a courtesan serving awful men in the time of the Mughal Empire. When the empire fell she selflessly saved many woman and children earning the attention of the angels. When they asked her to become an angel, she scoffed. She scoffed until she learned that the alternative was purgatory and then promptly changed her mind.

•·················•·················•

Mayra asks Cal how he is and we learn of his back story as a small villager with an average life who was killed accidentally in a bar fight.

The angels Raphael and Gabriel came to him as well, just like Mayra and they turned him into a demon, but not before showing him the world first.

Mayra tells Cal that she's missed him and they're interrupted by another knock at Fox's door.

Chapter Five:

We learn how Tom Parker was a farmer turned bourgeoise who built an empire of generational wealth that trickled down to the 4th Tom Parker, who is of course a ghost. Which is a great inconvenience.

•·················•·················•

We learn of the day that Tom met Violet. She walked into show his house and found him haunting it. They discuss his possible unfinished business which might have something to do with his ex-girlfriend Elaine and their sordid relationship.

When the potential buyers show up, Violet tells Tom to go ahead and haunt them.

Chapter Six:

Violet and Isis are at a group immortals meeting discussing Tom's curse when someone mentions that they could ask Death. Violet scoffs but someone mentions that his godson lives in their city and that he's a medium who may be a fraud.

So Violet decides to pay a visit to Fox D'Mora.

Chapter Seven:

Violet shows up to Fox's house with Isis. They ask him for help with Tom's curse but he refuses until Mayra reminds him of his ledger. He then agrees and everyone including Cal and Mayra, head over to the Parker mansion.

Chapter Eight:

At the Parker home, Violet had been showing to buyers when she and Tom meet a man who is a creature and can see Tom. Tom follows him to the home's perimeter where the man, who calls himself Brandt tells Tom that he's going to rob it.

Tom offers to help him.

•·················•·················•

An angel, a reaper, and the godson of Death are coming for a visit that afternoon so Tom and Violet discuss the house's sale and lack of prospective buyers.

Violet calls Tom's family a bunch of oddballs.

Which they definitely are.

 Questions:

  1. What do you think your ledger looks like?
  2.

Do you think that Tom could be something other than a ghost?
  3. Fox & Violet met...but now are they going to, you know?
