ABOUT THE ROLE

Book Designer

We’re looking for a talented and detail-obsessed Book Designer and typography expert to join our creative team. This role is ideal for someone who lives and breathes books, understands the publishing world, and has a deep love for layout composition, lettering, and storytelling through design.

In this role, you'll design stunning, collectible book covers and dust jackets for our exclusive editions.

Who You'll Be working With

You'll be part of OwlCrate’s design team and you'll work closely with our product development team to bring beloved stories to life through bold visuals, refined typography, and high-end print layouts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL

  • Collaborate with the product team to craft compelling book cover compositions
  • Create custom or modified typography treatments for titles, spines, & elements
  • Format print-ready files to meet publisher and printer specifications (bleeds, spine width, spot gloss, and foil specifications etc.)
  • Design original, eye-catching book covers and full dust jackets (front, spine, back, flaps)
  • Ensure consistency across editions (foil stamping, endpapers, sprayed edges, etc.)
  • Work on other book features, projects, and supporting materials (e.g. tip-in pages, endpapers, bonus content, book mockups)
  • Maintain organized file structure and version control for internal and external review
REQUIREMENTS

You Might BE OUR PERSON IF YOU...

  • 3+ years of experience in book cover design, book layout, or publishing design
  • Expertise in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop
  • Strong understanding of print production, including file prep and prepress
  • Portfolio that shows typography-first design, layout precision, and creative range
  • Comfortable working on multiple projects at once and meeting short deadlines
  • Passion for creating beautiful collector-worthy books
  • Experience with book publishing files and working with foil layers, embossing, or specialty finishes
  • Love the technical side of print design, including formatting details, color profiles, type kerning, and so on!

Bonus Points If You have:

  • Experience with hand lettering, custom font design, and creating original vector illustrations
  • Worked on YA/Adult Fantasy, Romantasy, or Romance titles
  • Previously worked on special edition publishing and/or subscription boxes

This is a permanent, remote position open to anyone worldwide, with strong written and verbal communication skills and a willingness to regularly attend meetings during working hours in Pacific or Eastern time. We are ideally seeking a full time hire, but will work with the right candidate on flexibility for personal needs. Please note that if you live outside of Canada, you will join our team as an Independent Contractor.

The target salary for this role is $70,000 (Canadian Dollars), or equivalent in local currency. Applications outside of this scope are welcome, please identify this in your application.
